Hydrogen Europe’s Post

Poland is currently in the process of updating key strategic documents: National energy and climate plan and Energy Policy of Poland until 2040. The eyes of civil society stakeholders are focused on the key issue of faster renewables rollout, but the decarbonisation of the Polish economy will be a much broader process, including transformational changes in the industry, transport or heating. Moreover, the updated plans have to take into account the new situation after the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine – cutting dependence on imported natural gas became even more important. Here comes the hydrogen economy. In the last couple of years, the field has become the focus of European policymakers, and Poland itself has approved a dedicated national hydrogen strategy. New Polish general strategies for the energy sector should reflect those developments. To facilitate the inclusion of the sensible, sustainable role of hydrogen in Polish decarbonisation, in September 2023 Fundacja Instrat held a workshop “Hydrogen economy in the update of Polish strategic documents” for civil society stakeholders – representatives of research and advocacy groups, most of which are already directly involved in the preliminary consultations for the NECP update. We covered and discussed ongoing policy developments on the European level, the current state of Polish hydrogen plans and legislation two years after the introduction of the Polish hydrogen strategy, and the possible role of hydrogen in the updated NECP. The workshop was a part of Green(ing) H2 project. Thank you to our very active participants, and most of all Wojciech Żelisko and Zofia Borowczyk who supported the preparation of the event.

😎 "Passion, Courage, speed." According to Dr.-Ing. Ulrike Beyer, this is what is needed to drive the energy transition forward. She is Head of the Referenzfabrik.H2 at the Fraunhofer IWU in Chemnitz. Her nickname: Miss Hydrogen. 💚 That's because her passion is #GreenHydrogen. It is seen as a key component in reducing CO2 emissions. But how is it produced and how can it be used? Hydrogen can be used to preserve and transport renewable energy. Beyer has an illustrative comparison to make: "It's like cheese, which preserves fresh milk." There are areas in Germany and around the world that are predestined to produce #renewableenergy. However, these regions often do not coincide with those that need the energy in large quantities. "With hydrogen, we bring energy to where we need it." Beyer and her colleagues want to take the production of hydrogen systems to a new level of industrial mass production. The German government is funding the project as part of the National Hydrogen Strategy. #InternationalCooperation also plays an important role for the IWU. "The more we exchange experiences and results, the faster we can find solutions," says Beyer. The IWU is currently carrying out two major projects in Namibia and South Africa. The main aim of the exchange is to create acceptance for the use of hydrogen in both countries and stabilise the energy supply in the long term. 🌳 For Beyer, hydrogen is like a young tree that has just been planted. The ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine has unintentionally brought attention to alternative energy sources – with a particular focus on hydrogen. Green hydrogen, generated through electrolysis, is a sustainable and clean energy carrier with the ability to power a low-carbon future 💪. ✅Great News! The first #hydrogenauction of the #europeanhydrogenbank European Commission has published today its resolution! With a bit of delay but with concrete project results, with Spain ahead in allocation with 3 projects, followed by Portugal with 2 projects, clearly the Iberian Peninsula is leading the #greenhydrogen race. A total of EUR 720 MM will be given to 7 projects from 4 European countries (3 Spain, 2 Portugal, 1 Norway and 1 Finland). These projects will produce 1.50 MM Tn of renewable H2 in the next 10 years, avoiding more than 10 MM Tn of CO2.💨 The price is between EUR 0.37 and EUR 0.48 per #kilogram of hydrogen and they will all receive different aid amounts, between EUR 8 and 245 MM.
