At National Gas, we are dedicated to making a significant impact on the journey towards net zero. As part of #NetZeroWeek, we wanted to share some of the innovative work we are doing to transition to a clean energy future. We are thrilled to highlight Lydia Vaughan, our Senior Hydrogen Analyst, whose work is instrumental in driving our net zero efforts 🌍 One of Lydia’s areas of focus is the delivery of Project Union, which aims to deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain. "The delivery of Project Union is the main focus of my role. Project Union will deliver a 100% hydrogen network for Great Britain, and I am currently supporting the delivery of this as we transition into the next phase, Front End Engineering Design (FEED), and accompanying supporting activities," she says. Her day to day role involves a diverse array of tasks, from engaging with stakeholders to developing funding documents for our innovative Project Union. "Often I am working on a variety of tasks at once and every day is different with a combination of written work and verbal engagement with project stakeholders. I regularly talk with our customers, both current and potential, to understand their future decarbonisation plans and how that coincides with the work we are undertaking with Project Union. I also work on developing the documents required to request funding from our regulator – Ofgem – for delivery of the project," she explains. The rapidly evolving hydrogen economy inspired Lydia to pursue a career in STEM. "Contributing to something that could make such a difference in reaching Net Zero by 2050, and the many interim decarbonisation targets, is a key reason that I was inspired to pursue this career," Lydia shares. When asked about what she enjoys most about her job, Lydia says, "I enjoy having the opportunity to work with like-minded individuals who are passionate about the route to net zero, and speaking with stakeholders both internally at National Gas, and externally with the customers we support on the gas transmission network." Her advice for others considering careers in energy: "My best advice would be to always pursue something that interests and excites you, and secondly, take all the opportunities you can to learn and see where your passion lies!" Lydia’s work exemplifies our commitment to innovative solutions and collaborative efforts in achieving net zero. We are proud of the strides we are making and the talented individuals driving these initiatives 🌱 #NetZero #HydrogenEconomy #WomenInSTEM #ProjectUnion

As a natural introvert, public speaking has never been my strong suit. In fact, it's something I've always dreaded. However, I recently had the pleasure of presenting the World Hydrogen Awards alongside Ciara Willis at the World Hydrogen Summit & Exhibition. Despite my initial nerves, the adrenaline rush I felt afterwards was exhilarating and left me on a high. This experience got me thinking about the importance of confidence in the hydrogen industry and the broader energy transition. Just like overcoming my fear of public speaking, tackling the hurdles in the hydrogen market requires a collective confidence and determination. It's a field full of opportunities, but also challenges. From technological advancements to market acceptance and regulatory support, each step requires unwavering belief in the potential of hydrogen and other ET initiatives as a clean energy solution. Presenting at the Hydrogen Awards was a personal milestone for me, and it served as a reminder of the power of confidence and perseverance. As we continue to navigate the path towards a sustainable energy future, let's carry this confidence with us, tackle the hurdles with determination, and excel in our efforts to make hydrogen a cornerstone of the energy transition. #summit #awards #careers #hydrogen #careers #energytransition #netzero
