About us

National Gas is one organisation, formed of three businesses – National Gas Transmission, National Gas Services and National Gas Metering. We own and operate the National Transmission System (NTS), taking gas from its various entry points to the country (whether domestic, liquefied natural gas, or interconnectors from continental Europe) and delivering it to where it is needed. Without us, gas has no mechanism to enter Britain and eventually reach the end user, whether power stations, energy intensive industries, households or for export. We are responsible for transporting gas to more than half a million businesses, 23 million homes and more than 30 power stations. The current NTS comprises nearly 5,000 miles of high-pressure pipes, driven by a fleet of over 60 gas compressors. We employ more than 1,800 people directly, while indirectly we support hundreds of thousands of jobs in industries which rely on gas for their operations. Without gas, these businesses cannot keep the economy moving and their future growth will be at risk.

Absolutely inspiring discussions at the Google Cloud Summit! Our CTO Darren Curley spoke at the "Navigating AI for UK Innovation" panel, alongside Tara Brady Google and Guy Duncan OVO and chaired by Beth Rigby. The energy sector has a long history, and Darren discussed what we’re up to at National Gas that proves that constant innovation is key to our sector’s future: 🚀 We’re delivering energy security for today by providing up to 75% of electricity during peak winter demands, while developing a hydrogen transmission network for clean energy tomorrow 🚀 We’re reallocating assets to link the major UK industrial centres together, allowing them to use or transmit hydrogen directly 🚀 We have our bold Carbon Capture Under Sea (CCUS) initiative, aiming to store and recompress carbon to ultimately deliver it back into the transmission network – such as out of our St Fergus Terminal We're proud to be at the forefront of this discussion, balancing innovation and regulation to shape a sustainable future for the UK. #SecuringBritainsEnergy

Jake Tudge, Corporate Affairs Director at National Gas, is joining Hydrogen for Life with a view to advancing the UK’s energy and economic competitiveness. Jake’s views in the panel discussion on "how the UK can be the most competitive place for hydrogen globally" will therefore likely provoke some fascinating discussions with other industry experts.  Watch this video to understand how National Gas is playing a major role in enhancing national competitiveness through Project Union, Great Britain’s core hydrogen network. This exciting programme will involve repurposing around 1,500 miles of Great Britain’s National Transmission System to provide 100% hydrogen to power stations, major industries, and storage sites – delivering clean power, protecting jobs, and keeping the UK secure. Jake shares the significance of H4Life for meeting the wider industry to understand how National Gas can support businesses in their missions, with a requirement to work as one industry by coming together to deliver a hydrogen future both domestically and globally. 👉 Don't miss out on this incredible opportunity to learn, connect, and shape the future of hydrogen. Great to see the launch of the National Energy System Operator (NESO) in Scotland at the Edinburgh event! 🎉 We were delighted to be alongside NESO, sharing our whole-system approach to energy and how we can support the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future. 🌍⚡ Our Project Union Director, Danielle Stewart, spoke at the event, highlighting the key role National Gas will play in Scotland’s energy landscape. We have a vital role supplying natural gas and delivering net zero through our CCS project SCO2T Connect and hydrogen repurposing. We’re proud to contribute to Scotland’s path toward a sustainable energy future.   Thank you to Fintan Slye and Alasdair Allan MSP for hosting us at this launch event. 🚀 #SecuringBritainsEnergy #EnergyTransition #Scotland #Hydrogen

Get up to much over summer? Well... some of our amazing colleagues spent the summer completing the 'Coast Buster' challenge, walking over 27 million steps for Barnardo's our corporate charity partner! 🎉 After the success of our first fundraiser, where members of the team walked the length of the UK's gas transmission network, we couldn't resist another. It was incredible to have people from all parts of the business brought together to support children and families up and down the country. The Coast Buster saw System Operations Director Ian Radley, along with a group of 50+ colleagues raise over £500. 👏 📸 Here's just a few of the images that were shared amongst participants to encourage and inspire one another to step for wellbeing and support a brilliant cause. And we’re not done yet... if you're going to the London Marathon next year, keep an eye out – you should expect to see some familiar faces running in support of Barnardo’s! 🏃♂️💨   #StrongerTogether #Wellbeing #Community

We have today released our Gas Winter Outlook, which presents our view of gas supply and demand this winter. Key takeaways from this year's report are: ✅ We have sufficient supply capability to meet peak demand 📈 Demand within Great Britain is anticipated to be broadly the same as last winter – with small increases in residential demand 📉 Total demand on our National Transmission System (NTS) is forecasted to reduce, as we expect reduced levels of export to continental Europe We know how essential security of supply is for the winter, and the Outlook shows how gas is continuing to play a critical role in complementing renewables in powering Great Britain. With a range of diverse and flexible gas supplies from the UK Continental Shelf, Norway, liquefied natural gas, interconnectors, and gas storage across Great Britain, we are confident that we can continue to provide a variety of supply options to keep the lights on, industries fuelled, and homes warm this winter.
