We are thrilled to announce the publication of the HSA's 2023 Annual Report! 2023 was an extraordinary year for the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance. Here are some of the year's highlights: 🚀 Launch of the HSA: We officially launched our organisation at the 2023 World Hydropower Congress in Bali, Indonesia. This milestone brought together stakeholders from government, civil society, industry, and financial institutions under a single, independent entity dedicated to promoting sustainable hydropower practices. 🏆 Certification milestones: 6 hydropower projects were certified under the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, setting new benchmarks for sustainability in the sector. 🌍 Global training efforts: We trained close to 200 professionals worldwide on the Hydropower Sustainability Standard, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to advance sustainability in hydropower projects. A huge thank you to the HSA’s growing community of members, supporters, and followers. Your support is essential as we continue our work well into 2024, driving positive change and promoting, improving, and rewarding good practices in hydropower projects globally. Excited to share that our journal article, co-authored with Putri Maulidar , Iffah hafizah, Naswatun Zikra, and Ghalieb Mutig Idroes titled "Enhancing Environmental Quality: Investigating the Impact of Hydropower Energy Consumption on CO2 Emissions in Indonesia," has been successfully published! Thank you to everyone who supported and contributed to this work. We hope this research provides valuable insights and contributes to efforts in improving environmental quality in Indonesia. Applying the Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) method, the findings demonstrate that hydropower energy consumption has a negative effect on CO2 emissions in both the short and long term, indicating that increasing hydropower energy consumption leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions. Factors such as industrial activities, deforestation, and agricultural practices also contribute to Indonesia's overall carbon footprint. Efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in Indonesia include initiatives to expand renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower, as well as policies aimed at reducing deforestation and encouraging sustainable land use practices. #30daymapchallange #gis #day9 #gisday #mapping #map #hexagons #rstudio #rprogramming #rprogramminglanguage

As Indonesia advances its renewable energy targets, hydropower emerges as a crucial pillar for sustainable power generation. Yet, the journey is far from ideal. Hydropower projects in the country are grappling with environmental concerns, social challenges, and high investment risks. While the potential is significant, the question remains: How can Indonesia harness hydropower effectively without compromising too much on its environmental and social responsibilities? In an op-ed for The Jakarta Post, our consultant Dwenda H. Dexiana unpacks the complexities of Indonesia’s hydropower dilemma and explores the path forward to ensure a balanced and sustainable approach to energy development. 🌍 💧 2023 saw significant advancements across the world for sustainable hydropower development and this drumbeat must continue going forward to meet net zero ambitions and ensure a clean energy transition. A defining moment from the past year was Pamir Energy’s Sebzor hydropower project in Tajikistan becoming the world’s first project to be certified against the Hydropower Sustainability Alliance's Hydropower Sustainability Standard. On receiving the certification, Amrikhon Raimov, General Director of Pamir Energy, said: “We are proud to be leading the way in sustainable hydropower development in Tajikistan and beyond. As part of our efforts in continuing to achieve the highest standards of sustainability, we are now already working towards obtaining the Gold certification against the Hydropower Sustainability Standard. Sebzor is just the beginning of our journey to provide clean, reliable and affordable energy while protecting the environment and supporting the communities we serve.” Read about other moments that shaped sustainable hydropower in 2023: https://lnkd.in/dMMy4x99 #WithHydropower #Tajikistan #Sustainability

In this fascinating article for @Foreign Policy, my Chemonics International colleague, Chanaka Wickramasuriya, chief of party of the @USAID Sri Lanka Energy Program, makes the argument for concessional financing for the #EnergyTransition in #developing nations. Using #SriLanka as a case study, Chanaka unpacks the challenges these nations face when it comes to this transition, the biggest of which remains a lack of affordable #capital and domestic #financing capabilities, and proposes ways in which an enabling environment can be created to overcome these obstacles. The African Development Bank Group’s Board of Directors has approved $8 million to support the rollout of a pioneering pilot mini-grid program with potential Africa-wide benefits. The funding is provided by the Bank-managed Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA). This fund is provided in the form of concessional loans, grants, and risk mitigation, and plans to finance up to 50 percent of mini-grid capital expenditures for the Ethiopia Distributed Renewable Energy and Agriculture Modalities (DREAM) program. The program was developed in collaboration with the The Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet (GEAPP), which is providing co-financing, and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Water and Energy, Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands, Ministry of Agriculture, Agricultural Transformation Institute, and other stakeholders. GEAPP’s Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Joseph N., said, “GEAPP was created to address two of the defining challenges of our time – ending energy poverty and tackling the climate crisis through a just transition to renewable energy, and DREAM is a great example. Leveraging on strategic partnerships to implement the program, DREAM communities won’t just get electrification, but will also get reliable power for irrigation and clean drinking water. The program will also enable the local economy to create enormous value and accelerate rural development for close to 300,000 people.” Daniel Schroth, the Bank Group’s Director for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency, said, “The DREAM project provides an innovative approach to addressing the water-energy-food nexus in Ethiopia. It demonstrates the importance of partnerships and the catalytic role played by the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA) in crowding in private sector investments in energy access.” Read more: https://lnkd.in/ehuPYExB #RenewableEnergy #Solar
