Does being a successful agency recruiter guarantee you'll be a successful agency owner? No. Being successful in agency is a great foundation to have, however, and is normally the first key indicator to thinking about setting up on your own. But what's the biggest reason new businesses don't succeed? Cashflow. Their outgoings are higher than what they're bringing in. They grow too quickly and have operating overheads that they can't cope with. And how many successful agency recruiters have dealt with cashflow or the operational rigours that come with being a business owner? Not many. I've spoken with so many recruiters who are looking to branch out on their own because the business they work with is poorly run, there's no structure, there are cashflow or payroll issues, high turnover of staff - the list goes on. But make sure you don't fall into the same trap - it's easy to set up your own business, anyone can do it, about 40,000 people have in the UK and not all of them will have done any recruitment beforehand!
