Salary negotiations are a lot less technical than they may seem at a distance. Here’s a hilarious video. 🤣 ⏰ But in all seriousness, the dance around salary doesn’t need to be complicated. Employees: What are you willing to take to do the work? Employers: What are you willing to pay to do the work? Both sides: How much room is there to grow and build together? 🚀 There’s a lot of posturing that goes on, so it’s important not to take things personally and stand your ground when you have conviction about what you think you should be remunerated (or what the role merits). And then the real value is in the middle where new things get built! These are the people you want to build with. #paytransparency #salarytransparency #personalgrowth

I’m a pretty terrible negotiator. I usually take prices as they are, with the assumption that it’s likely the best or not worth the effort of haggling. This applies too when it comes to negotiating salary. The few times I’ve been in that position, I would give a vague “higher than last drawn” reply when asked for expected pay. So the idea that a hiring company needs to know your last drawn salary is neither surprising nor outrageous. To me, it simply is. Except it isn’t. It’s not legally enforceable nor required by the Manpower Ministry. It’s just a common practice in Singapore. So should you be revealing your last drawn salary? Are you putting yourself at a disadvantage? TLDR: do your research and know your worth. Your last drawn salary is not necessarily a reflection of your current skills. Better yet, watch Tiffany Ang and Gerald Tan Zi Ping explain how to negotiate this tricky situation with HR.

💸Why is it important to negotiate your salary? Kristle Bautista, CHRL, MHRM shares in her talk: If you don't ask, then you leave the opportunity to others. Imagine this scenario: other people join the organization and request more. You, on the other hand, do not ask for more. This situation benefits only the business. Not asking for more doesn't harm you or them in the immediate sense. However, as salaries continue to rise and grow over time, you'll always be one step behind. Imagine everyone else requesting more because they deserve it. And if there is a time to ask for more, it's both at the beginning and throughout your career. The key to asking for more is to believe in your own worth, because you are indeed valuable. Watch now on Taekoff: https://lnkd.in/g_PsW_jc
