Yacht owners and operators can also reduce their environmental impact by following simple guidelines, such as reducing fuel consumption, minimizing waste, disposing of waste properly, and being respectful of marine ecosystems. Here are some tips for green yachting: Reduce fuel consumption: Avoid running engines unnecessarily and use fuel-saving techniques, such as cruising at slower speeds. Minimize waste: Reduce the amount of waste produced on board by recycling and composting whenever possible. Here are some suggestions to minimize the impact of antifouling activities: 1. Non-biocidal antifouling coatings: Look for non-toxic or low-toxicity antifouling coatings that don't rely on biocides to prevent marine growth. These alternatives use physical or chemical barrier properties to inhibit fouling without harming marine life. 2. Biofouling control through design: Incorporate biofouling control measures into the design of structures like ships, offshore platforms, and aquaculture facilities. Smooth surfaces, proper material selection, and strategic placement of equipment can reduce the settlement of fouling organisms. 3. Mechanical cleaning methods: Regularly cleaning the submerged parts of vessels, such as hulls, with mechanical methods like brushes, scrapers, or high-pressure water jets can remove fouling organisms without adding toxins to the water. 4. Ultrasonic and ultraviolet (UV) technologies: Use ultrasonic or UV treatments to deter fouling organisms. Ultrasonic devices emit sound waves that interfere with the attachment of organisms, while UV radiation disrupts their reproduction and growth. 5. Copper alternatives: Copper-based biocides are commonly used in antifouling coatings. As part of my ‘zero emissions’ journey at Hydac, I now look at everything with a different perspective. Currently on holiday in Madeira and every day, twice a day, a whole fleet of these large catamarans pass our hotel on dolphin and whale watching tours. Some of them advertise themselves as Eco tours but not a single yacht with a mast and sails has passed our hotel with its sails up despite a brisk breeze. Every single one is running on diesel engines. Why? Wind power is zero emission, saves the operator a load of money on diesel and humans have used wind power very successfully for thousands of years for transport and other industrial operations. Do they not employ crews with the knowledge to ‘sail’ rather than drive? Surely an Eco tour is one which uses the wind to propel it forward, not diesel.

That's over five mph faster than our previous 2022 record! 🔥 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝟮: Fastest Diesel Outboard World Speed The same boat, named 𝙋𝙚𝙜𝙖𝙨𝙪𝙨, achieved this global feat, showcasing the power of sustainable technology. 🌍 Fuelling the Future Our secret weapon? Bespoke blends of biodiesel from Coryton's SUSTAIN Racing range. Made from 100% second-generation biowaste (mainly wood waste), these fuels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% compared to traditional fossil fuels. 🌎🔍 Cleaner, Faster, Greener Not only did this record-breaking run save an estimated 470 kg of CO2, but it also burned cleaner than fossil-based diesel, emitting fewer NOx particulates. 🌿 Acknowledgements 👏 Kudos to the Lake District National Park and Coniston Speed Week for their support.
