Europe lacking ambition? Fintech mood downbeat? Startup growth slowing down? Clearly nobody told Revolut.
Excited to be sharing the stage with CEO and co-founder of Revolut, Nik Storonsky, at Slush this November!
Index Ventures has been on the journey with Revolut since their seed round back in 2015. In that time we've watched the company evolve from a scrappy contender to established heavyweight. From fintech upstart to the world’s first truly global bank, Revolut is continuously and relentlessly redefining how money moves in the digital age.
With 45 million customers, a new UK banking license, and $545m in profits for 2023, Revolut isn't just successful – it’s one of the most generationally significant companies to emerge from Europe 🇪🇺🇬🇧💪
Can't wait to dive deep with Nik on how Revolut is building the future of finance. And who knows? We might even get to hear some of Nik’s famously unfiltered opinions on culture, leadership and the industry at large.
1. The One-Liner Masterpiece
Craft an Irresistible One-Liner: Begin your deck with a powerful one-liner that captures the essence of your startup. This sentence should distill your value proposition into a clear, concise, and memorable statement.
For example, “We are the Uber of [Your Industry]” or “Solving [Specific Problem] for [Target Audience] with [Unique Solution].” This sets the tone and makes it immediately clear what your startup is about and why it matters.
2. Investor ROI Snapshot
Highlight Investor ROI Early: Investors are always looking for the return on their investment. Dedicate a slide early in the deck to show a snapshot of the potential ROI. Include market size, potential earnings, and exit strategies. By giving them a clear picture of the financial upside early on, you align your goals with theirs and increase their interest in the rest of your deck.
3. The 3-Year Vision Map
Visualize the Future with a 3-Year Vision Map: Include a slide that visually maps out your startup’s growth trajectory over the next three years.
Use timelines, key milestones, and growth metrics to illustrate where your startup is headed. This gives investors a clear vision of your long-term potential and the strategic steps you’ll take to get there, fostering confidence in your leadership and planning.
By incorporating these three unique steps into your pitch deck, you can create a narrative that is not only compelling but also demonstrates foresight, clarity, and investor alignment.
This approach will help your deck stand out and resonate with those who hold the keys to funding your vision

As a VC I analysed the fintech market for years.
I saw a lot of scrappy startups grow into revolutionary companies.
Revolut. Wise. Monzo.
It was inspiring.
But when I got the itch to start a company, the inspiration came from somewhere else…
My wife managed the finances for her dad’s construction company.
I watched her work late night at night, manually processing payments.
When I spoke to other finance teams, accountants & bookkeepers, they all had similar experiences.
And they weren’t as enthusiastic about “revolutionary” ideas as my friends in VC (read: AI).
What they really wanted was help doing the fundamentals better.
More control over cash flow.
Processing payments & bookkeeping more easily.
Doing it all with one tool, at a low cost.
Basically: managing money in and money out.
So that’s what we decided to focus on.
We even named our company after it.
Pretty revolutionary 😉
The animal spirits are returning to the fintech sector.
Revolut is set to see its valuation jump by more than a third to $45 billion from the sale of employee-owned shares. Big name investors such as Coatue Management and Tiger Global Management are among the expected buyers of the stock in a bet on the bank disrupter’s continued success against traditional lenders.
Documents provided to investors help explain the excitement. Revolut, already benefiting from revenue and profit growth, projects $9.3 billion in annual revenue in 2026 and has a long-term ambition of hitting $100 billion in sales by 2040.
Is that realistic? To help answer that question click the link to the story.

Fintech has hit a bottom after plunge in valuations and squeeze on funding, execs and VCs say.
In 2021, global fintech funding reached an all-time peak of $238.9 billion, according to KPMG. Companies such as Block, Affirm, Klarna, and Revolut had hit seismically high multibillion-dollar valuations.
But by 2022, investment levels sank sharply and fintechs globally raised just $164.1 billion. In 2023, funding sank even further to $113.7 billion, a five-year low.

Key investors and transformative projects in 2024
This year has been an exciting roller coaster for the fintech sector, with groundbreaking projects receiving substantial backing from visionary investors across the globe. Here one of the key players and projects:
1. Sequoia Capital: known for its strategic foresight, Sequoia Capital has led a $200M Series C funding round for London-based fintech startup Revolut. This investment will bolster Revolut's expansion into the US market, enhancing its digital banking services and innovative financial products.
2. Accel: Accel has made a significant $150M Series B investment in Plaid, a company revolutionizing financial data connectivity. This funding aims to enhance Plaid's infrastructure, making financial interactions more seamless for users across the Atlantic.
3. SoftBank Investment Advisers: SoftBank has injected $300M into Nubank, a Brazilian fintech now targeting the UK market. This partnership is set to disrupt traditional banking with Nubank's user-friendly digital solutions, providing a more inclusive financial ecosystem.
4. Andreessen Horowitz (a16z): a16z has backed TransferWise with $250M, focusing on scaling its international money transfer services. This investment underscores the importance of cost-effective, cross-border financial solutions.
5. Insight Partners: Insight Partners led a $750 million funding round for Chime, a US-based digital bank that is redefining the banking experience for everyday consumers. Chime’s focus on fee-free banking and financial wellness tools has made it a favorite among millennials. The new capital will help Chime expand its product suite and enhance its customer experience.
The trend this year indicates a strong inclination towards AI-driven solutions and the integration of traditional finance with emerging technologies. Investors are keen on projects that offer scalability, security, and compliance, reflecting a mature and forward-thinking investment strategy.
