IN THE NEWS Changing the face of your field of research is an achievement that most scientists can only dream of. #i3S researcher Salomé Pinho and her team have attained this elusive goal as they have uncovered a blood alteration that enables to predict whether a patient will develop Crohn's disease. This discovery could shift the way inflammatory bowel diseases are diagnosed and treated altogether. Outstanding work! This study was coordinated by i3S and developed in the scope of the GlycanTrigger EU Project. #i3Snews #i3Sresearch #i3Sinnovation #IBD #collab

Understanding thrombocytopenia in cats Thrombocytes, or platelets, play a crucial role in blood clotting and healing of injuries. Low numbers of these cells can lead to increased risks of bleeding, which can lead to serious health problems in cats. The reasons for thrombocytopenia in cats are varied and can range from infections and inflammation to neoplastic diseases. https://lnkd.in/e9EbsU3c

The paper introduces a new Nephrology Referral Form (#NRF) aimed at aiding general practitioners (#GPs) in identifying and managing Chronic Kidney Disease (#CKD) in its early stages. Through a mixed-methods survey spanning 2021-2022, the NRF was introduced and tested in Italian settings. Results showed 41.67% of GPs using the NRF weekly, with significant agreement on its utility in identifying CKD cases and streamlining referrals. Feedback highlighted its positive impact, suggesting avenues for improvement and emphasizing its potential for enhancing early CKD detection and management in primary care.| https://ow.ly/H4Ge50SgZmW

IN THE NEWS Over the years, #i3S researcher Salomé Pinho and several young scientists in her team have been working to unravel how glycans influence T cells' ability to either be pro- or anti-inflammatory. Last year, the team published a paper in which they show that the correct type and structure of sugars covering the surface of these cells is pivotal for the development of a healthy immune system. Understanding this mechanism could pave the way to creating new, better therapies for chronic inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. 👀📰 👇 #i3Snews #i3Spapers #immunity #lupus

🦵 Did you know? 💡 Knee pain is not limited only to the elderly population. It is estimated that knee osteoarthritis is ranked among the top 20 diseases in the 40–45 years age group [1]. 🦵 However, the prevalence of knee osteoarthritis rises with age, with a 10% prevalence in men and 13% in women aged 60 years or older. 📈 The knee is one of the joints that is most often affected by arthritic changes. The probability of developing knee arthrosis over the course of a lifetime is, on average, 45%. In order to alleviate the pain of the diseased patients, to delay surgical interventions or, in the best case, to avoid them altogether, measures should be taken in time. For this reason, we asked Alexander Ablaß about the extent to which shock wave therapy can be used for knee arthrosis to accelerate the healing process.
