Disaster at Disney: a remarkable "inside story" with in-depth reporting by James Stewart on what really transpired at Disney that led to Bob Chapek's firing and Bob Iger's return. While it is easy to blame both Iger and Chapek for this disastrous failed succession, I believe it is the Disney board that is accountable. The Disney board is made up of exceptional individuals, yet collectively they failed to manage a successful succession at the top. No one on the board has yet to step up publicly to take responsibility for the board's failure to execute its #1 duty: choosing and guiding a successful CEO transition. No doubt Chapek was the wrong person all along. No doubt Iger failed to move on after 16 years at the helm. Yes, Disney is an extremely complex organization and there are few leaders who would be great CEOs of Disney. Nevertheless, choosing the right successor and ensuring a smooth, seamless transition is the board's duty. It seems each board member had opinions, but none of these outstanding individual leaders stepped up to take charge and lead the board.
