Drug development is notoriously expensive and slow, with an average cost of $1B, a timeline of 10-15 years, and a 90% failure rate in human trials. However, AI is poised to revolutionize this process. The New York Times highlights two distinct AI approaches: computation-oriented methods and highly automated rapid-iteration labs. I've previously discussed MIT's breakthroughs in using AI to identify new antibiotics. Now, the NYT article sheds light on Terray Therapeutics, which employs a lab-on-steroids approach. Terray's highly automated labs generate and test millions of small-molecule drug candidates daily, producing 50 terabytes of raw data. This data-driven method aims to accelerate drug development significantly. Despite these advancements, candidate drugs still need to undergo human trials, so the true impact of these innovations will be seen in the next decade.
