In November, governments have an opportunity to make catalytic pledges to make all childhoods safe everywhere - in communities, households, schools, and online. IRC is asking governments to capitalize on that opportunity, to include children living in conflict, crisis, and displacement, and to recognize that caregivers need support if they are to support children and keep them safe. 🇺🇸 Some days, like today, can remind of us of how both tragedy and heroism can live on in collective memory in a way that prompts reflection. 🌫️ On the side of tragedy, I think of how debased some people’s realities must be to think it appropriate to resort to terrorism as a means of making a point, gaining attention, or causing action. The harm that occurred on September 11th, 2001 in the United States prompted enhanced national security, at the same time, creating a heightened xenophobic attitude towards Brown people and a strong depreciation in the value of diversity, among other reverberating effects. ⭐️ On the side of heroism, humanity also presented in full forth with individuals involved in emergency response such as law enforcement, firefighters, EMTs and other first-responders, as well as every day civilians stepping in to help save the lives of their fellow Americans. On that day, healthcare professionals in the hospitals and health systems exerted themselves to their fullest extents as well. After 9/11, the healthcare system was distended with healing survivors and a nation beset with trauma. The healing journey still persists for some… 💞 And with that, I think of how leading a life of service and humanity is perhaps the more apropos way of ensuring the world we live in is one that we are comfortable with and want to better. I reflect on how grateful I am to work in healthcare, an industry at its core where most people find purpose in caring for and helping others. 🫱🏻🫲🏼 Today I find this flyer on my desk at work, which I want to share with you in the spirit of this reflection where I consider how survivors of 9/11 are aging. I want to share with you this event happening in Baltimore, Maryland on Saturday, October 19th focused on caring for older adults with serious illness, from a lens of interprofessionalism and through a holistic approach. It’s efforts like these through the partnership of ASCP, the International Community Initiatives, the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and Notre Dame of Maryland University that recognize how human life is founded in #health and all of us deserve to live our healthiest lives, even in the wake of tragedy and in the benevolence that can result. #reflection #inmemory #humanity #agingcare #healthcare #firstresponders #unitedstates

🌟 One of the key outcomes of the recent workshop on decriminalising suicide in the Caribbean was the creation of a regional coalition. This coalition will officially launch around the 4th International Conference of the Small Island Developing States. 🌐 🔍 Currently, four Caribbean countries—Trinidad & Tobago, Grenada, St. Lucia, and The Bahamas—still have laws criminalising suicide. These outdated laws not only penalise individuals in severe crises but also perpetuate stigma and discrimination, preventing people from seeking the help they need. 🎥 Watch Part 2 of our participants' reflection video from the workshop, where they share their key takeaways. Let's Unpack It (LUI), LifeLine International, International Association for Suicide Prevention, UNICEF, Pan American Health Organization, UNDP and MindWise

-International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression- Tomorrow, June 4th, is the UN’s International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. This day is dedicated to acknowledging the pain and suffering endured by children around the world who are victims of physical, mental, and emotional abuse in situations of conflict. Established by the United Nations in 1982, as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect the most vulnerable among us. It highlights the profound impact of war, violence, and aggression on children and underscores the urgent need to take action to safeguard their rights and well-being. Children in conflict zones face unimaginable hardships, including the loss of family, displacement, injury, and trauma. They are often deprived of education, healthcare, and the opportunity to grow up in a safe and nurturing environment. With that in mind, I’ll simply leave these staggering stats, not from the last 42 years (1982 - 2024) but just the last 9 months! • 15,438 children have been killed. • More than 10,000 children have been injured, most with life-changing, lifelong injuries. • More than 17,000 children have lost one or both parents. • Over 3,500 children under the age of five are at risk of death, due to policies of starvation, food shortages, lack of nutritional supplements, and prevention of aid by occupying forces. These children suffer from severe malnutrition, which affects their physical development and exposes them to the risk of infectious diseases. These conditions are exacerbated by a lack of vaccinations and essential medications, further threatening their survival and growth. Thats more than 45,938 children who have been subjected to unimaginable suffering or worse, death! #InternationalDay #InnocentChildren #EndViolence #ChildProtection #UN
