🚀🌹 Youth Justice Campaign: A Fair Go For Young People 🌹🚀 Street Industries is proud to be one of over 100 organisations and individuals who signed the Open Letter to the NSW Premier about youth justice. Youth Action NSW, the peak body for Youth Services in NSW, is spearheading this critical initiative to improve support and services for young people in conflict with the law. By listening to young people's voices, we aim to provide the help they need earlier, preventing them from coming into conflict with the law in the first place. This campaign focuses on enhancing support and services for young people before, during, and after detention. It's about more than just the conditions in detention; it's about stopping young people from going into detention and ensuring they have the resources and support to get back on track. Investing in young people is crucial because the consequences aren’t minor. We can make a difference and build a brighter future for all. 'We should always be cautious of Governments, whatever their pre-election promises' At least we knew where we were with the last Government? and the huge (sometimes impossible) task we had to get most of our issues on their agenda for the right reasons. What does this new Government mean for our sector? Jam tomorrow & jam yesterday but never jam today: with Keir Starmers words gloom on the budget can we be optimistic? Even if it takes awhile? An important report on the misuse of COVID fines affecting First Nations children, those with disability and homeless young people disproportionately. As Senate Bill 63 threatens to deepen the injustices within our legal system, we're reminded of the urgent need for solidarity and action. This bill, aiming to expand wealth-based detention, strikes at the very core of our fight with the Protected Class Network (PCN). It's a stark reminder of why we began this journey: to dismantle systemic barriers that disproportionately affect the most vulnerable, especially black mothers who stand to lose the most — their freedom, their dignity, and precious moments with their families, all because of financial hardship. SB 63 isn't just a policy proposal; it's a direct attack on the values we hold dear. It challenges the principle that justice should be a right, not a privilege afforded only to those with means. This is why our work with PCN is more critical than ever. We founded this network to address and combat the very issues SB 63 embodies — to ensure that no one is punished for their poverty, to protect our black mamas, and to keep families together. For the speed readers amongst you, you’ll need less than 5mins to read about JUSTICE’s brand new initiative (read below). My perspective: A fair, well-functioning justice system is a necessary foundation for thriving societies, strong democracies, and robust economies. But rather than serving as a stable bedrock enabling us all to live together and flourish, widening cracks across our justice system are ruining lives and harming public trust and efficiency. Better data and evidence-gathering are key first steps towards turning this situation around. Over JUSTICE’s history, the organisation has transformed the legal landscape for the better, led by evidence, expertise, and a focus on practical solutions. Having developed and guided transformational change before, we know it can be done. And, as the only non-governmental organisation whose work spans the whole UK justice system, we are uniquely placed to begin building the data and evidence infrastructure the sector so badly needs, to better help the people we serve. I’m really pleased we have commissioned Dr. Natalie Byrom to do this work on JUSTICE’s behalf, with the important support and funding from The Access to Justice Foundation - thank you to both Natalie and Clare Carter for your advice, collegiate approach and ambition. I look forward to the conclusion of this first stage, to figuring out our next steps and building a collaboration of support to realise this vision.

⏰ Today is Programme for Government Day ⏰ As the Scottish Government prepares to unveil its Programme for Government for 2024–25, the Consortium has outlined seven essential priorities that need urgent attention. 1️⃣ Scottish Human Rights Bill: A commitment to introducing this Bill by February 2025 to strengthen human rights protections and access to justice. 2️⃣ Reform of Civil Legal Aid: Comprehensive reform is needed to ensure everyone has access to justice, regardless of financial status. 3️⃣ Access to Basic Necessities: Measures to guarantee safe housing, affordable transport, adequate income, and healthy food are crucial to reducing poverty and inequality. 4️⃣ Prison Reform and Safety: Addressing overcrowding, outdated facilities, and improving conditions within Scotland’s prison system is imperative. 5️⃣ Addressing Hate Crime: Enhancing data collection, funding for reporting centres, and implementing a robust Hate Crime Delivery Plan. 6️⃣ Protection of Disabled People’s Rights: Ensuring support for disabled individuals to live with dignity and independence, despite systemic barriers. 7️⃣ Reinstating Free Bus Travel for Asylum Seekers: Reversing the cancellation of this program to avoid further marginalisation and isolation. These priorities are essential for fostering a just and equitable Scotland. The Consortium calls on the Scottish Government to seriously consider these expectations and to take decisive action in the 2024–25 Programme for Government.
