Pay attention to word choice when funders talk about grantees and the communities they support. I recently watched an explanation of the word "community" by a funder and it was that it "embraces everyone, regardless of race, identity, or circumstance". In reality, this is not true. Framing "community" as broadly embracing everyone, regardless of their individual identities, inherently (or by design) allows people to fall through the cracks. This colorblind approach is actually more harmful than it is helpful, despite the best intentions (remember, intentions don't matter if you're still harmful in the end). The best communities that I've been fortunate to be part of embrace everyone FOR their race, FOR their identity, and FOR their circumstance and meets them where they are at to make sure everyone is good. We don't all always need the same type of support and we don't always need the same level of support. Funders: Go to community meetings. Talk to residents that live in the neighborhoods you serve. Stop paying random white consultants in other states to conduct surveys that only reflect the response from the ~60 people who happened to attend your two poorly advertised community input sessions to tell the neighborhood something they already know in a report that gets published 8 months later. People are struggling now and they will gladly tell you exactly what they need if you give them the chance to feel like they have a voice and aren't just a number for your fancy reports. #nonprofits #philanthropy #grants #fundraising

Happy Juneteenth! Today is a day for remembrance and celebration of how far the equal rights movement has come since 1865. But it’s also a day to recognize all the work there is left to do. Research has found that BIPOC-led organizations receive drastically fewer resources than white-led organizations. Who can submit for a grant? 1. Teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, and other educators in the Ellington elementary, middle and high schools. 2. Students must have a sponsor who is an educator within the school district and will oversee use of grant funds. 3. Community or parent volunteers whose proposed project will take place in the Ellington schools and will advance the Foundation’s mission. 4. Northern Virginia is facing a big challenge. Only 29% of children living at or near the poverty line attend preschool in Northern Virginia. This puts one of our area’s most vulnerable populations at risk of falling behind. Our free preschool programs serve children who would otherwise be deprived of a preschool experience without this option. And, AART focuses on the whole family, not just the student! We collaborate with families to support their child’s journey and strengthen the parent/school relationship. We envision a future where all children, especially our most vulnerable, enter school prepared to learn and succeed.
