In a previously-launched Falls Awareness episode of the IHSA Safety Podcast, Brian Barron, Senior Manager of the Construction Health and Safety Program at MLITSD, discusses common issues identified during site inspections, such as falls, struck-bys, electrical issues, excavations, and administrative controls. Brian also discusses key points including the necessity of having a functioning joint health and safety committee or workers' trade committee, having appropriate level training in place for workers, and using ladders appropriately. Listen to Episode 7 on ihsasafetypodcast.ca and learn more about fall hazards and safety tips.

Training Recap: Mastering the Burn Tower 🔥 At Firehouse Training, our recent sessions last month took our team into the heart of fire operations—inside the burn tower. We focused on critical skills that are essential for any firefighter facing intense interior attack scenarios. Here’s what we covered: Hose Management in Stairwells: Navigating stairwells with a charged hose line requires precision and teamwork. We emphasized techniques for efficient hose advancement, ensuring smooth movement without kinks or entanglements. This allows for a quick and effective interior attack, essential when seconds count in a high-rise or multi-story building fire. Search and Rescue Tactics: In the thick smoke and zero-visibility conditions of the burn tower, our team honed their search and rescue skills. We practiced the art of maintaining orientation, communication, and line-of-sight with your crew. Knowing how to sweep rooms, use thermal imaging cameras, and manage potential victims is vital to bringing everyone out safely. Interior Firefighting: We drilled on the strategies for aggressive interior firefighting—focusing on effective ventilation, temperature reduction, and fire containment. Every firefighter was challenged to maintain situational awareness while pushing forward, ensuring that every move was deliberate and coordinated. Key Takeaways: • Hose Handling: Keep your hose line flaked out and properly managed to avoid delays during crucial moments. • Stairwell Strategies: Always communicate with your team, use the stairwell as a point of orientation, and be mindful of the stairwell’s chimney effect during a fire. • Search & Rescue: Always have a plan before entering, stay low, and remember to frequently check in with your crew. This training was an intense reminder of the complexity of our job and the importance of continuous practice. Whether you’re advancing a hose line, searching for victims, or fighting the fire head-on, every skill matters. #FirehouseTraining #FirefighterTraining #BurnTower #InteriorAttack #HoseManagement #SearchAndRescue #FirefightingSkills #StaySafe #KeepTraining
