Good news for #climateadaptation at the end of the year: Last week, the German government decided on a new national climate adaptation strategy. This means that for the first, quantifiable goals exist with which the German government wants to make infrastructure, buildings, agriculture and other sectors #climateresilient. 🙌 The climate adaptation goals are divided into seven thematic clusters: infrastructure, land and land use, health and care, water, economy, urban development, civil protection and one overriding cluster. The climate adaptation strategy will also monitor progress on reaching the 33 climate adaptation goals on the basis indicators. 📊 Of course, Germany is just one country in #NorthWestEurope – are there any similar developments in Netherlands, Belgium, France, Luxemburg or Ireland? Finally, our first article on local climate adaption in the EU is published! This summer, Sara Pinho and Anghel Georgiana and I got funding from Journalismfund Europe to investigate the state of local climate adaption in different European municipalities. Our conclusion is shattering: Europe is not prepared nor are we particularly aware of climate risks. But there is hope: Wait for our next article, in which we will take a #solutionjournalism approach and show best-practice scenarios for local climate adaptation. Thanks to klimareporter° for publishing our work! https://lnkd.in/edaMSdCU

Happy to finally see the APCC's report on #land #use and #climate #change in Austria published! Markus Hametner and I contributed to a chapter on #SDG implementation in the Austrian context, highlighting synergies and tradeoffs between different SDGs. Spoiler: SDG indicators connected to economic growth, human consumption and production are interrelated and have affected those related to climate, ecosystems and water quality. Such localised impacts need to be considered to better implement the 2030 Agenda - and to prioritise areas where urgent action is required. Here's the link if you want to have a (German) look: https://lnkd.in/dDCQEMmM.

In a new report, Philipp Genschel, Mirko Wegemann, and I investigate public opinion about climate change policies in Germany: levels of support, polarization, relation to ideology/partisanship, and effects of protest (using an experiment): https://lnkd.in/erKcRRQY

❗ The state is responsible to protect citizens from global warming! That's what the European Court for human rights ruled today - against Switzerland, and in favor of Swiss "Climate Seniors". Specifically, the verdict says that the climate seniors's appeal to Swiss courts should have been accepted and treated. Instead, all Swiss court levels didn't accept the seniors' case. Seniors wouldn't be specifically hurt by the climate change, Swiss courts argued. On short term, this will not directly change Swiss policies. It may even increase political polarisation: deniers of climate change and profiteurs of existing, free pollution rights will denounce "political influence of courts", while supporters of more stringent climate policies will have to choose whether to again go to courts. But fundamentally as well as emotionally, this verdict is potentially powerful. https://lnkd.in/dR_RQ2DQ

#EuropeanElection2024: In an #interview with Susanne Henn, SWR #Radio, I commented on the potential success of right-wing populist parties and its consequences for the future #climate #policy of the #EuropeanUnion: "#ClimateProtection is not getting any easier. The low-hanging fruits in climate policy have already been harvested in recent years. From now on it will hurt - both in the wallets of citizens and in the budget of companies." ➡ See also Centrum für Europäische Politik's analyses of #EU #climatepolicy: https://lnkd.in/eYCiTCsr #Europawahl2024 https://lnkd.in/e9rPpfk4

The recent "Heat Check" by the Deutsche Umwelthilfe reveals that many German cities are unprepared for intensifying heatwaves, with insufficient green space and excessive urban sealing worsening public health risks. This lack of adequate heat protection not only exacerbates risks but also hinders other local actors from taking appropriate measures themselves. 🌡🏙 The new Heat Protection Strategy from the 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗨𝗿𝗯𝗮𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 as well as a new proposed amendment to the Federal Building Code, both issued this week, represent new efforts to put climate adaptation high on the agenda as an intersectional issue. These efforts enable cities to move forward to greater #HeatResilience, leading to more systematic and positive impacts on communities and local actors, especially those who are otherwise unable to take protective measures on their own. At adelphi, our major project Zentrum KlimaAnpassung provides expert consultation, training and networking for German municipalities and social institutions to adapt to climate change. It helps address extreme weather events, including heat waves, by offering tailored solutions and support. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/d9_-3u7V In another big project, adelphi experts are advising the Umweltbundesamt on the feasibility and implementation of a national heat action plan, to supplement existing local and state-level strategies. ➡️ https://lnkd.in/dzmsbniw Together, these projects aim to address the urgent need for effective adaptation strategies for cities and municipalities in a warming climate. 🌿🌍 Beatrice John, Christian Kind, Walter Kahlenborn, Theresa Kaiser, Vera Engelmann, Linda Hölscher, Vivianne Rau, Martina Müller, Bernadette Mundthal, Stephanie Bilgram, Simone Podschun, Gideon Hussels, Daniela Fuß-Ulbing, Julia Bartsch, Katja Nicola Frick #Adaptation #UrbanResilience #Vulnerability

How to avoid #climate #fraud - fake climate protection projects? A scandal surrounding climate projects in China could become one of the biggest cases of fraud in German climate protection. According to research by public German news station #ZDF, many upstream emission reductions projects are apparently based on false information. Analysis of satellite images shows that many existing projects in China were submitted as allegedly new, others without the knowledge and approval of the Chinese owners. Many projects seem inadmissible. However, their alleged CO2 savings were credited to the climate balance of the German transport. When there is money - there are #criminals. We need to end this by moving beyond faulty #certifications and sloppy #inspections. https://lnkd.in/d6Q5s8Aa

#climate #scam - fake climate protection project? The scandal surrounding climate projects in China could become one of the biggest frauds in German climate protection. Clearly, transparency in environmental projects is a factor worthy of attention. In addition to using technology solutions such as blockchain, choosing reputable and experienced consultant companies is a top priority.
