Urban centers in the Southeast are witnessing a surge in growth, giving rise to a new trend: adaptive reuse of existing structures. But what's behind this shift from new construction to repurposing? Bohler expert, Kevin Eakes, P.E. , explores the driving forces—such as the scarcity of greenfield sites and rapid population growth—that are reshaping our cities. There's a growing interest in more effectively integrating urban infrastructure into our cityscapes. Historically, the urban places created by water, energy, and waste infrastructure have often been restricted, underutilised or poorly managed. By enhancing the multi-functionality of urban infrastructure spaces, we can enhance the liveability of places, promote ecological health, and support more effective infrastructure. In our new publication, Reena Tiwari, Prof Marian Tye and I explore the creation of a ‘green, blue and smart’ infrastructural space, the transformation of a fenced off stormwater drain into the Wharf Street Next Generation Community Park (WSNGCP) in the Canning City Centre. We use multiple methods to identify types of institutional work undertaken – either maintaining, creating or disrupting the institutions that shape the creation of a digitally-driven green and blue infrastructural place. #smartcities #infrastructure #watermanagement #greeninfrastructure https://lnkd.in/gr3rFpqr

Future-Proofing Our Communities: Balancing Growth and Character As a real estate professional, I'm increasingly aware of the challenge we face: How do we accelerate growth to meet housing demands while preserving the essence of our communities? Key Observations: • Many markets still face inventory shortages • Population growth continues to put pressure on housing • Community character is a vital asset we can't afford to lose This balance is crucial for sustainable, livable cities. But how do we achieve it? Some ideas to consider: 1. Smart zoning for mixed-use developments 2. Investing in green spaces and community gathering areas 3. Encouraging renovation and adaptive reuse of historic buildings 4. Developing efficient public transportation systems I'm curious to hear your thoughts: • What aspects of your community do you want to preserve? • What amenities would enhance your area's livability? • How can we innovate to create more housing without sacrificing character? Let's start a conversation about shaping the future of our communities. Your insights could inspire the next generation of urban planning and real estate development. First Class Homes 425.269.7229

Last week a number Jacobs Cities and Places team members, Tanja Redl, Richard Burley and Andrew Hancock, attended the Property Council Victoria’s third event in the Outlook series, the Precincts & Cities Outlook Breakfast. The event focussed on urban development examples from London and Melbourne, with key insights shared by panel members @Tom Mackellar from Lendlease and @Lissa van Camp from the Suburban Rail Loop Authority. We noted a common thread from two of the panel members, Tom Mackellar, Group Head of Development, Lendlease and Lissa van Camp, Executive General Manager Land - Planning, Environment & Sustainability, Suburban Rail Loop Authority: that being the importance of community. Tom Mackellar: highlighted a hard lesson learnt around community impacts, such as the lost community sentiment following social housing relocations. This insight underscores the importance of considering community impacts in urban development projects. Lissa van Camp: spoke about the extensive and ongoing consultation underway as part of planning for SRL, including on the Draft Precinct Visions which have received thousands of community responses - emphasising the value of community engagement in shaping urban development. Jacobs, as part of the AJM (Aurecon, Jacobs, Mott MacDonald) Joint Venture, is contributing to station designs and structure plans for the new station precincts, including vision, consultation, urban design, social value and development potential for SRL East. This involvement showcases Jacobs’ commitment to contributing to significant urban development projects and promoting significant community outcomes.

Revolutionizing Urban Living: A New Blueprint for SF and NY San Francisco and New York are no strangers to urban challenges. Housing affordability and land use have been persistent issues for years. But what if a grid system could offer a fresh solution? That's the idea behind a new blueprint that promises enhanced urban planning and integration of green spaces. The approach includes transforming unused commercial properties into affordable homes, tapping into innovative engineering and urban planning. By learning from other cities, we can reimagine SF and NY as more sustainable, accessible, and enjoyable places to live. It's an exciting prospect that balances modern needs with the rich, historical tapestry of these iconic cities. Let's work together to create a brighter future for urban living. #UrbanLiving #Sustainability #AffordableHousing

In the 1930s, Le Corbusier’s model for the 'Radiant City' was appealing because it addressed the planning problems of the day, separating out land use based on functional zones supported by freely circulating transport networks with abundant green spaces in between. Today, we understand the challenges of functional planning methods in practice – urban sprawl, isolation and streets devoid of people and place, resulting in the loss of social and economic vibrancy that conglomeration creates. How can we shift focus from functionality to resiliency? In the second of a two-part series on resiliency in transport and urban planning, Mary Haverland, Senior Technical Director - Transport Planning & Advisory, explores how planners must not just champion a single vision but promote the evolution of the urban planning methods, guidelines, tools, and governance we employ in order to build more resilient cities.
