Only 11% of UK LGBTQ+ professionals feel they can be their authentic self in general society, according to research from myGwork - LGBTQ+ Business Community.   Although this number is shockingly low, it is encouraging that the workplace is considered one of the safe places. This indicates that all those corporate initiatives we see on our LinkedIn feeds can make a positive impact. However, about 50% of UK LGBTQ+ professionals still think their manager is not fostering an inclusive environment. So what can we do to improve?   I recently became the chair of Ericsson UK LGBTQ+ network, and in this role I had the privilege to welcome Lisa Charlwood-Green to our company Pride event. Lisa shared her emotional and inspiring personal story, along with some useful tips on how to create a more inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ team members:   · Listen and learn: Listen without prejudice and let them lead the conversation. · Don’t dig: Avoid personal questions and unnecessary explanations; conduct your own research. · Tailor your support: Ask how you can help and offer additional support without imposing your own ideas. The simplicity of it really resonated with me. The key to the success of corporate initiatives lies with allies, and sometimes just a simple acknowledgment and conversation can make a significant impact.

This not only a great tool for the work place, but working in customer service you don't know about the person on the other end of the phone. It can take years to accept who you are as an LGBTQ+ person. The internal struggle of realizing that you are different than many of your peers, of finding community, and of (hopefully) eventually celebrating who you are is a journey that many do not understand. Through this journey, queer people develop empathy and communication skills that is honed through experiences of advocating for themselves and others. Their identity becomes a source of strength. This self-confidence and recognition of oneself brings valuable perspectives and skills to their career. When LGBTQ+ individuals see their identity as an asset rather than a liability, they can present themselves with authenticity and conviction, leading to more successful and fulfilling career opportunities.
