Ibram X. Kendi’s Post

When Americans commonly know their history, then #BlackHistoryMonth will not just be proudly celebrated by Black Americans. Non-Black Americans will celebrate Black History Month with nearly as much pride because they will know they have benefited from longstanding Black struggles to make freedom, equality, and democracy a reality for Black Americans by making it real for all Americans. When we say Black history is American history, it is not a slogan. It is a historical reality.

You’re so right! I’ve come to look forward to Black History Month for the next wave of heightened visibility for art, history, literature, music, food, and play that will lead me into another year-round learning more about not just the challenges but the triumphs in our complete histories. Wish I’d kept a log of this learning adventure as I often connect ideas and facts across time and media but cannot recall the source. Guess it’s not too late to start my catalog. Pondering further.

Black people are only 13.6% of the US population, but our impact is seen and felt across business, entertainment, sports, you name it. Organizations and non-black people should recognize that they are STILL benefiting today from black people. History is now!

There’s pretty much nothing we can touch in our homes that’s has not been invented or contributed to in some way by African American genius. There are pretty much no words of empowerment that haven’t been adapted out of the struggles of ever resilient African American folks.

Yes sir, so true! I'm reading one of your books wtih my family at dinner and every chapter brings more revelations, more stories we didn't know and those that were told from a White perspective only. We just have to get over the shame, own our 'narrowly taught' histories, learn, commit to grow and then yes, we can stand alongside our Black coworkers, friends and families and do better! Thanks for always opening our eyes Ibram!
