Leverage your conference attendance/participation to showcase your growth and strengths
Don’t waste conference content. Share your learnings instead. Millions of big ideas are thrown around at conferences, but a lot of that wisdom doesn’t go beyond the room. If you attend a cool conference session where you learnt something that absolutely blew your mind, post about that. Don’t just post a photo of yourself at the event and thank the organisers. Tell us what you learnt there. If you keynote or present conferences, repurpose your speech notes and talking points into posts and videos. That way, you can amplify your message. It’s the difference between speaking to 100 people in the conference room, or tens of thousands on social media. How do you make content at a conference? What works and what doesn’t? Comment below. Why Panels Fail 👎 We've all been there—sitting through panels that just didn't hit the mark. In fact, I've encountered organisers who are vehemently against including panels at events, convinced they don't add value. Panels often fail when organisers and panellists treat the discussion as the definitive conversation on the topic. It’s unrealistic to expect to cover the depth of a subject in the typical timeframe of a panel, but you can certainly ignite interest 😉 Successful panels happen when organisers, panellists, and moderators see the discussion as just the beginning of the conversation. Their role is to challenge the audience to think differently, spark curiosity to explore further, or set the stage for a more in-depth discussion later. Essentially, the purpose of a good panel is to generate interest that leads to collaborations, partnerships, investment, and new client connections. When this is executed well, everyone benefits. My biggest complaint about hosting panels is that I don't get t speak to my panelists after our time on stage as there are often queues for people to speak to them. “Clients need to see the value in agencies” Julie Shorrock It may sound obvious two parties need to see value in a business relationship, but… In the world of events, many agencies have been commoditised and it considerably diminishes their value. It is not a sustainable way for the industry to move forward and has a detrimental impact on all industry stakeholders. “Agencies need too be strategic partners rather than doers and order takers… it all comes back to storytelling.” Rick Stainton STATE OF THE NATION These views were voiced during a panel session named ‘State of the Nation’ at International Confex last week, and the session — covering a lot of ground, from attracting talent to commercial models — sounded very familiar. Many of the issues aired have been challenges discussed around industry board tables for much of the last two decades. Indeed, some of the discussion points reminded me of a blog ‘What Next for the Agency Model?’, written for Mash Media in 2018: https://lnkd.in/eDCdbSyq In it, I discussed agency value, the dangers of commoditisation, and the need to recognise value and where it is derived. I argued that human capital, innovation and creativity will be at the fore of the new industry paradigm, enabled by advances in technology. The key, as the panel recognised multiple times, is successful #storytelling EDUCATION & CONNECTION THROUGH STORYTELLING The industry needs to fully embrace storytelling to connect, engage, and educate. If it doesn’t, we’ll likely be having the same conversations for the next 20 years. A positive recent step taken by Rick and moderator Simon Hughes was to establish The Power of Events (UK) in 2022, a not-for-profit platform to help showcase the UK events industry, enabling anyone to explore all the elements that make up the diversity of the UK industry. Effective storytelling by various stakeholders across the “four nations” can help to showcase the multitude of opportunities that exist within the industry, and can also be utilised for a multitude of purposes within the industry. Many of us are guilty of multi-tasking while attending a conference panel, using the comfort of the back row to get work done. Afterall, what are you missing if people are sticking to scripted messaging and talking "at" you? In this op-ed, I argue how in-person events, whether they are global conferences like #Davos or smaller-scale convenings, are critical to promote our understanding of big global problems and their potential solutions. However, the default approach of a panel can often fall short of moving the dial. More creativity, more risk, and in some cases, more investment is needed to really cut through and make an impact.
