Something that students don't typically consider is how involved a university is in their community. I was born into a generation of activists who choose majors (and sometimes schools) with the intention to help others. However, we get too stuck on the college websites discussing a renowned public policy center or public health research program. Usually, these are only accessible to graduate students. Instead, we should evaluate the schools that actually impact the community around them the most: 1. Brandeis University 2. Hillsdale College 3. United States Military Academy (West Point) 4. Brigham Young University 5. Creighton University 6. Mercer University 7. Pitzer College 8. Wheaton College 9. Salve Regina University 10. Emory University 11. Xavier University of Louisiana 12. John Carroll University 13. College of the Atlantic 14. University of North Carolina Asheville 15. Virginia Tech

Back to School‼️ As summer winds down, it's time to gear up for another school year. Whether you're a student, parent, or educator, these tips will help ensure a smooth transition and set the stage for success. 1. Establish routines early Start adjusting sleep schedules a week or two before school starts. Set consistent times for waking up, meals, homework, and bedtime to ease into the school rhythm. 2. Get organized Purchase necessary supplies and organize study spaces. A clutter-free environment promotes focus and productivity. 3. Set goals Encourage students to set academic and personal goals for the year. This provides motivation and a sense of purpose. 4. Address anxieties Many students feel nervous about returning to school. Open conversations about concerns can help alleviate stress. 5. Plan healthy meals Nutrition plays a crucial role in learning. Plan balanced meals and snacks to fuel bodies and minds throughout the day. 6. Limit screen time Gradually reduce summer screen time and establish rules for device usage during the school year. 7. Get involved Look into extracurricular activities or volunteer opportunities. These can enhance learning, build social skills, and boost college applications. 8. Communicate with teachers Establish open lines of communication with educators early on. This partnership is vital for student success. 9. Embrace a positive mindset Approach the new year with enthusiasm and curiosity. A positive attitude can significantly impact learning outcomes. 10. I appreciate this piece elevating the multi-faceted work that #CommunitySchools do and the multiple sources of support that keep them going. Specifically, I appreciate this description of what community schools do—"a community school engages the entire school and its community in providing students the targeted support and resources they need to succeed in the classroom: from helping families navigate access to health care, mental health services, food, and the internet, to providing workforce training, literacy development, tutoring, and safe after-school programming." And, I appreciate how this piece highlights the interplay of nonprofit, federal, and state funding that has helped more students benefit from this evidence-based approach to education—including the federal Full-Service Community Schools grants.
I'm grateful for the opportunity to help spread the word about the good work happening in New Mexico's community schools. Read more in my guest column in today's Albuquerque Journal: https://lnkd.in/eq-ZEzev

I build async learning programs for nonprofits 🎓 college access & success | workforce development | career-connected learning
How did we make this college success program NOT feel like yet another course? We tapped program alums, now young professionals in the field, to share their post-program journeys. Scholars felt seen, supported, and inspired for the road ahead. When you're developing a course at your organization, how do you bring your community into the process?

Feeling the freudenfreude! Freudenfreude is a word created by social scientists to describe the enjoyment of another's success. Amid the relatively dark news in my feed today, a story of generosity brightly shone through and sparked this feeling: A new transformational $1 billion financial aid gift at John Hopkins from Bloomberg Philanthropies will increase access to health professions for students from middle and lower class families. Most medical students will now attend Johns Hopkins tuition-free, and many will also receive support for living expenses. Students in nursing, public health, and other graduate programs will benefit as well. I am inspired by the equity-minded goals of this gift as articulated by Michael Bloomberg. “By reducing the financial barriers to these essential fields, we can free more students to pursue careers they're passionate about—and enable them to serve more of the families and communities who need them the most." Research shows that acts of generosity, like gift-giving, are contagious and increase happiness. Freudenfreude and generosity are both contagious—pass it on! #generosity #whatinspiresme #academicmedicine #healthcare #highered
