The phrase “good things come to those who wait” is being stretched to the limit by SES. But that is not an excuse to take any old compromise and then pat ourselves on the back and proclaim success. Now, more than ever, is not the time to avoid meaningful reform of Europe’s airspace. Passengers and the environment deserve better. Airlines for Europe (A4E) #airspacereform

At the Global Symposium of ICAO, the Hon. Minister's address at the Ministerial Roundtable Discussion focused on Nigeria’s progress to date, including challenges and successes, toward achieving the Long-Term Global Aspirational Goal of net-zero carbon emissions in International Aviation. Here is a snippet of his address.

Honored to have had the opportunity to speak about Caribbean air service at the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)'s Caribbean Week in New York. A few key points that I took away: 1. There is an opportunity for destinations to "co-pete" rather than compete to inspire longer, multi-island vacations: destinations should market their unique attributes to drive visitor arrivals. When all islands market sell the same attributes (the best food, best beaches, best hiking, best nature, etc.), travelers are unable to distinguish among the cacophony of options and thus choose their destination--almost always just one island--with some degree of randomness. Contrast this against Hawaii, the Aegean, Indonesia, and other archipelagic destinations that inspire longer trips by communicating the value of making multiple stops. There is probably no region in the world with a higher density of cultural and natural diversity from island to island; it is time to start highlighting that incredible variety! 2. Governments should view inbound visitors, not taxes on airfare, as the ultimate source of income: burdening tickets with what constitute some of the highest airfare taxes globally suppresses demand. Getting visitors to the islands should be the priority; the real economic benefit comes from the money that is spent on the islands--not from collecting taxes on inbound transportation. 3. The 45 million people of the Caribbean are tired of being forced to rely on Miami as the regional hub for travel within the region: I received a standing ovation when I communicated my belief that San Juan is the rightful hub for the region--it has right geography and magnetic destination attractiveness (read: shopping, cruises, beaches). It is not uncommon for people traveling from, for example, Port of Spain to St. Thomas or from Grand Cayman to Curaçao to have to travel north to Miami just to turn around and fly south again. The region deserves a better solution.

We need a single European sky, a real #airspacereform, supported by the underlying framework regulation. What we see are compromises increasing complexity and maintaining status quo – missing tangible enhancements for the well-being of individuals and the environment.

The Single European Sky (SES2+) negotiations continue but the direction of travel is taking us towards a destination that will only satisfy the negotiators without delivering a true reform of Europe's airspace. ⚖️ Europe's passengers and the environment deserve better than a compromise for the sake of compromise. ✈️🌍 Time for policymakers to take a bold stance and deliver a meaningful reform of how we fly in Europe.

One of the main factors which have been playing a vital role in the current wave of globalization is the progress registered in transport sector in general and the air transport sub sector in particular. Traditionally the air transport service is conducted under restrictive Bilateral Air Service Agreements (BASAs). However, starting from the late 19th air service regulations are moving into liberalization on bilateral, multilateral and regional frameworks. The reform on liberalization is pioneered in the USA in 1978, adopted by EU in the 1980s and 90s, and later championed by international organizations like International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
