  • Aviation is committed to decarbonisation, but Europe is falling behind in scaling up Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Without decisive action, increasing SAF imports will drive up costs for consumers, weaken energy independence, and shift clean energy jobs outside the EU. A new report by ICF, commissioned by Europe’s aviation industry, outlines seven key measures to fast-track SAF production and ensure Europe leads in this emerging sector. Among them: 📌 Risk-sharing mechanisms (e.g., Contracts for Difference) to unlock investment and lower costs. 📌 Stronger financial support for advanced SAF facilities through grants and loans. 📌 Prioritising access to feedstocks and renewable electricity to ensure competitive SAF production. 📌 Refining existing policies (ReFuelEU flexibility, ETS allowances) to create a stable market. The Clean Industrial Deal and Sustainable Transport Investment Plan represent key moments for European policymakers to act. With the right measures in place, Europe can strengthen its SAF industry, secure its leadership in clean aviation, and support a competitive energy transition. • Flying millions of passengers safely and on time from A to B takes a team effort involving a wide variety of players from airports to Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs). Yesterday a delegation from A4E travelled to Frankfurt to meet with the German ANSP DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung GmbH! We had a detailed discussion on how airlines and ANSPs can work together to reduce delays, increase airspace efficiency and improve capacity planning. These are shared priorities as we look to ensuring a smooth 2025 summer season, Looking forward to more of these fruitful exchanges and our thanks to Sabine Hornig and team for hosting us! • Yesterday, Monika Rybakowska and Lennard Hartman represented A4E at the 5th General Assembly of the Alliance for Zero-Emission Aviation (AZEA), hosted by EUROCONTROL. The Alliance is a voluntary initiative of more than 195 private and public partners who share the objective to prepare the entry into commercial service of hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft. A few highlights of what was discussed: 🔹 Roadmap Delivery: AZEA reinforced its commitment to delivering a comprehensive ecosystem roadmap by the end of 2025. 🔹 Work Plan for 2025-2026: Key new areas of interest and horizontal activities to support the roll-out of hydrogen-powered and electric flights were identified. 🔹 Updates from Working Groups: members were updated on progress made on aviation regulation, certification, and standardisation, including the recently adopted Standardisation Gap Report. It's no secret that achieving zero carbon emission aviation requires concerted efforts across all partners - from airlines and manufacturers to airports and regulators. Only with strong collaboration and bold actions by EU policymakers, Europe can lead the way in building a more sustainable, efficient and technologically advanced aviation sector. 👉 https://lnkd.in/dPneu_vy

  • Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a key plank in making aviation more sustainable. The ReFuel EU Regulation came into force earlier this year obliging fuel producers to supply 2% SAF within the total amount of aviation fuel they supply to airlines this year. Our member Norwegian has partnered with the Norwegian Armed Forces and St1 to ensure a type of SAF called biofuel powers 15% of the defence sector's business trips, cutting CO2 emissions by over 2,000 tonnes. How this will happen: 📌 Local solutions: 1 million litres of biofuel delivered to Ålesund Airport, boosting supply security and cutting lifecycle emissions by up to 80%. 📌 Scaling ambition: Norwegian plans to blend 15% biofuel on over 1 million flights by 2028. 📌 A blueprint for others: This is the first agreement of its kind in Norway, setting a new standard for innovation and sustainability in aviation. Decarbonising aviation is crucial to keeping Europe connected by air for future generations. This initiative demonstrates that we can reach ambitious climate targets though the cooperation and collaboration between airlines, governments and other state actors. You can find out more about biofuels and how Norwegian is collaborating with the Norwegian Armed Forces in the video below. 👇 #SAF #decarbonisaiton #collaboration #airlines

  • When it comes to transport, multimodal is word being spoken of quite a bit in Brussels at the moment. ✈️ 🚆 🚌 Tomorrow, the European Commission will host a workshop on the proposals on Single Digital Booking and Ticketing (SDBTR) and Multimodal Digital Mobility Services (MDMS). It will focus on the new impact assessment study, covering its methodology, timeline, and key policy objectives. For airlines, finding a way to connect modes of transport as seamlessly as possible is a worthwhile goal. But before rushing to legislate and offering what look like quick fix solutions, we need to make sure we're tackling the actual challenges that make achieving this goal difficult. Strengthening what already works and overcoming those challenges can go a long way in improving multimodal transport. A4E has looked at what makes integrating rail and air travel difficult. On top that, we've identified gaps between modes of transport for when things go wrong, something that is critically important to ensure seamless multimodal transport. Take a look below. 👇 #Multimodality #EUTransport #MDMS #SDBTR

https://lnkd.in/exsbQaMJ   Good to talk to Kate Abnett from Thomson Reuters about the challenges airlines face with the Monitoring, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) of non-CO2 aviation effects under the EU ETS, which came into effect on 1 January 2025. At the heart of the MRV system is NEATS—an IT tool designed for aircraft operators, accredited verifiers and Competent Authorities to connect the data and models needed to calculate aviation's non-CO2 impact. The challenge? NEATS isn’t ready yet. The European Commission must urgently finalise and roll out NEATS, as airlines cannot effectively implement the MRV system without it. For context, some A4E members estimate they would need to manually collect up to 30,000 data points per flight to replicate the required data without this critical tool. Non-CO2 effects remain a complex and evolving area in aviation's climate impact. At A4E, we’ve consistently supported a robust and practical MRV system to address this knowledge gap. While the MRV system came into effect this year, airlines are still waiting for clarity on the NEATS system, which the European Commission is responsible for providing. For regulation to be effective, it needs to be delivered as a complete package, providing the industry with the certainty required to ensure compliance. Clarity and collaboration are essential. That’s why the industry is looking to DG CLIMA to prioritise NEATS’ deployment and provide a concrete timeline for its rollout, enabling the non-CO2 MRV system to deliver meaningful and impactful results. #Sustainability #Aviation #EUETS #NonCO2 #MRV #NEATS

  • The EU Council's recent move to reopen discussions on the long-stalled 2013 revision of EU air passenger rights (EU261) could be a major development. The key question remains though whether this will reduce the number of court cases on passenger rights by providing clear and fair rules that limits the need for interpretation by courts and spells out precisely the rights for passengers and obligations for airlines when things go wrong.     In our latest blog from Laura Kancel, we break down: ✈️ The ever-expanding scope of airline liability and its impact on the cost of flying ✈️ Key elements of the 2013 proposal, including defining "extraordinary circumstances" ✈️ The 2023 Commission proposals on passenger rights   Much work remains to ensure a balanced framework that serves passengers and airlines alike.   Read the full blog here: https://lnkd.in/dMRArziQ   #Aviation #PassengerRights #EU261

  • 2025 means that fuel producers must now start supplying Sustainable Aviation Fuel as part of the #ReFuel EU Regulation. Producers must ensure that 2% of the fuel they supply for aircraft is #SAF. Our Policy Director Monika Rybakowska spoke with Rachel Millard from Financial Times on how 2025 is a year of adjustment for the airline industry and that legislation like ReFuel EU should be there to make flying better and more sustainable and not more expensive or restricted. You can find the a link to the piece in the comments below.
