Chartered civil engineer || Doctorate in Sustainable Infrastructure Systems, Transportation infrastructure || RENKEI Climate Change Research Fellow || Highway engineer || Engineering Design management
On Monday I attended the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE)'s 'Question Time Debate: Can the UK do major infrastructure projects anymore?'. Organised jointly with the Civil Engineers Club (CEC). Chaired by Gavin Pearson of the New Civil Engineer, the panel (John Pelton MBE, Svetlana João, Prof Jennifer Schooling, Mace's Mark Reynolds, David Prout, and Jan Bessell) provided great insights into #designmanagement, #riskmanagement, and #procurement strategies, as well as political foresight, that can improve the success of large projects such as #HS2. From a technical perspective, a key takeaway was the need to acquire and curate data more strategically, e.g improve the reliability of ground investigations and other surveys at planning stage to reduce risk to all parties.

Participating in this Question Time debate in Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) in London: Can the UK do major infrastructure projects anymore? The cancellation of the northern leg of HS2 in Oct 2023 dominated UK headlines and spotlighted weaknesses in the UK’s capability to plan and deliver major infrastructure projects. Questions have emerged on infrastructure planning, procurement and delivery, as well as the role of different stakeholders in this process. Lots of things to cover.
