Very good analysis of the FAA certification timeline. Another factor is the availability of FAA staff, which is still in a shortage state, combined with the reduced headcount of existing DERs, down from over 3000 to about 800 today, with some disciplines with very small numbers of delegates period. Then as one can easily witness even with certified aircraft and rotorcraft if there are any problems during any phase, even after certification, there could be delays. Many applicants will face issue papers before they ever get certified.

Boeing 737 - the BBC article quotes an expert "It could be design, it could be a manufacturing defect, or a combination of the two. Or it could be something else, something unknown". That is a worrying large list of things that could be wrong after the already reported software and bolt issues. No doubt the investigation will uncover the root cause but questions around approvals, safety and quality also need answering. At what point does something like this result in the withdrawal of a product in this and other industries? Every second, every minute, thousands of aircraft are #airborne, similarly, thousands of aircraft are undergoing basic #preflightchecks, and general A, B, C, and D #maintenancechecks, thus creating multiple #technicalrecords on operators' piling list of #documents. Operators are bound to maintain the #record of every check that an aircraft #component undergoes for legal and various commercial reasons. I’m thrilled to share that the Federal Aviation Administration published AC 21.17-4, Type Certification - Powered-lift (https://lnkd.in/g8fBd_ai). This advisory circular provides the airworthiness criteria for type certification for powered-lift under 21.17(b). This paves the way forward for powered-lift designs as we no longer need to publish each manufacturer’s airworthiness criteria in its entirety, and only need to publish manufacturer-specific criteria if there are deviations or additional criteria requested (and only the deltas/additions). We welcome comments in the Federal Register Docket No. FAA-2024-1586. In conjunction with the AC, we also published PS-AIR-21.17-01, Safety Continuum for Powered-lift (https://lnkd.in/gSytpFn9). Recognizing that the airworthiness criteria alone didn’t provide safety targets, this policy statement identifies certification levels that are driven by gross weight, passenger seating configuration, and type of operation. These certification levels are correlated with safety objectives for both systems safety and aircraft performance in our “essential” and “increased” categories. To whom it may concern; includes examples of excellent crosswind landings. I wouldn’t call the video as a “the crazy process behind testing” done during and at the end of a manufacturing phase. Rather, I’d call it the reliability tests in the guidelines of the set rules and regulations. Aircraft testing during manufacturing is tough. AFM limitations have safety buffers for the aircraft operators. But, the pilots of airline operators should not breach into that buffer zone (as far as the aircraft limitations concerned).

London, UK; New York, USA /10 July 2024 /Vertical Aerospace — Vertical Aerospace [NYSE: EVTL], a leading global aerospace and technology company pioneering zero emissions aviation, has announced the expansion of its Design Organisation Approval (#DOA) scope by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (#CAA). This extension signifies the CAA’s increased confidence in Vertical’s engineering capabilities as the company progresses towards Type Certification for its VX4 #aircraft. The expanded DOA scope allows Vertical’s engineers to certify more technical areas, including flight control, avionics, and electrical systems, thus streamlining the certification process. This development demonstrates the CAA’s trust in Vertical’s ability to achieve the highest #aviation safety standards, comparable to those of large commercial #airliners. Vertical will work with the CAA to further expand its DOA privileges, enabling the regulator to rely on Vertical’s approval for certain activities, such as issuing a Permit to Fly for piloted flight tests on the VX4 programme. The company is set to complete the assembly of its most advanced VX4 prototype and begin its piloted flight test programme at its Flight Test Centre at Cotswold Airport. In March 2023, Vertical became the first eVTOL developer to be granted a DOA by the CAA. Today’s expansion of the DOA scope is a significant step towards obtaining a Type Certificate, a prerequisite for entering commercial service. Simultaneously, the CAA and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) have agreed on a collaborative approach for certifying Vertical’s VX4. This agreement sets the foundation for concurrent certification and validation by both authorities, ensuring a streamlined process. Conducting Borescope Inspections on aircraft engines and APU’s are very common during Pre-Buy Assessments and full PPI’s, even more so if the engines are not on a program. An aircraft Pre-Buy condition survey should at least include a detailed visual and functional review of the aircraft interior, the cockpit, and a visual inspection of the aircraft exterior.
