IFG Resource Analyst, Tera King, was a featured speaker at the National Association of State Trust Lands (NASTL) summer conference in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Representatives from across the country met to discuss the vital role state trust lands play in funding public schools (K-12 and universities) and enjoyed a tour of IFG’s Chilco sawmill as part of the conference. State trust lands are typically leased for livestock grazing, agriculture, timber production, and renewable energy development and are a critical resource that balances revenue generation for public schools with sustainable land management and conservation. In Idaho, the Idaho Department of Lands (IDL) manages the state’s timberland asset on behalf of the endowments (public schools and hospitals) and sells timber through a competitive bid process. IFG is proud to support this important program and, on average, purchases 48% of what IDL offers for sale; which means, 20% of our logs come from Idaho state trust lands. A portion of our logs are also purchased from the states of Washington and Montana. "We partnered with Soil Capital because they have the ability to scale, they have a proven track record, they have the ability to speak to farmers, and understand that farmers do not want to be burdened by somebody else's idea. It has to be someone willing to help them on their farm, to do what's right for their farm, and right for their soil." Thanks to Raymond James & Associates, Inc. for inviting me and Matthew Howard to contribute on water stewardship and compliance. When it comes to water, companies can find CSRD compliance intimidating. However, for those that plan ahead and complete the reporting process can unlock many opportunities, including lower operational costs in the use of water, energy, materials, and waste; improved transparency and trust; and stronger competitive advantage. The Water Council’s WAVE program helps companies assess and prioritize risk in order to set enterprise-level water stewardship policy and targets that are directly responsive to how water is used and impacted where they operate. Stakeholders can have confidence in the program, as it builds off globally recognized best practices advocated by WWF and WRI, among others, and aligns with CDP, GRI, and EU CSRD and CSDDD reporting frameworks. In sum, when it comes to water, you will have confidence that you are doing the right things, at the right times, in the right places. Feel free to contact me to learn more. I think it's under appreciated that state R&D investments have a broad and meaningful impact, including to hundreds of Maine businesses (and their employees) that build, operate, supply, and provide critical services to organizations like The Jackson Laboratory. The BDN calls this out in their endorsement of Question 2, writing that as a result of a 2017 voter-approved bond, "[JAX] purchased more goods and services from Maine-based vendors and suppliers after the bond funding. In 2022...the laboratory spent $60 million with almost 600 Maine-based vendors from 116 towns — including wood pellets from Athens, insurance coverage from Bangor, and boiler mechanics from Lincoln.” Yes, Question 2 is a targeted investment in Maine's technology sectors, but the impact will be widespread. https://lnkd.in/dZExzAFy

Cost of energy comparisons between solar (also wind) and other forms of energy ( fossil fuels and nuclear) rarely consider how much land is needed for solar and wind. #powergenerationworldwide
Prime Farmland is gone forever when solar sites take over. In Texas in the next 6 years we are loosing over 2 million acres to development. In the next 2-3 years we will be loosing over 1.5 million acres to solar, much of it prime farmland now in the triangle between Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin, on the coastal plans and fertile East Texas, by the Red River counties. quote - "Jerry Hatfield, former director of USDA Agricultural Research Service's National Laboratory for Agriculture and the Environment, said Reuters' findings in the four counties are "concerning." "It's not the number of acres converting to solar," he said. "It's the quality of the land coming out of production, and what that means for local economies, state economies and the country's future abilities for crop production."" https://lnkd.in/giK5KTCx
Insight: As solar capacity grows, some of America's most productive farmland is at risk
