Computer vision and Ai will transform retail operations and eventually, supply chain. There are few companies pioneering this space and as noted, include Robotic, handheld devices/smart phones, and fixed cameras. All of these approaches have merit and can be applicable within differing retail channels. Typically, well-funded robotics companies pursue mass merchants given the monitoring scope and capital available. Smartphones have been used for years to spot check individual SKU's backstock, and now incorporating shelf image recognition for enhanced metrics. Fixed cameras are likely the most comprehensive monitoring system because they evaluate the product movement 24/7/365. The other systems simply do not track what is happening until scanned. It is also critically important to understand where products may be misplaced or otherwise planogram deficient. As co-founder of Aapya Solutions – Vision 37, we believe that actual object detection is critical to determine if the right item is in the right place, in addition to on shelf availability. Our focus is in the AlBev channel and we have incorporated over 150,000 SKU's into database for an omnichannel approach. While we are all just scratching the surface of CVAI and its use cases, there is no question that the days of manual audits will be limited in years ahead.
