EU-Canada Leads to Collaborations on Responsible AI Futures. We’re happy to report our workshop on Responsible AI Futures, a collaboration with the EU Horizon program was a great success! Thanks to all the responsible AI experts who participated. Together, we explored the implications of AI technologies in working groups focused on sustainability, policy, society, and technology. Consensus so far is clear: Few domains will remain untouched by AI over next 5-10 years, and we are committed to ongoing research and policy development that considers current trends and unexpected outcomes. Our great appreciation to Katalin Feher PhD, habil the #HorizonEurope #NGI Visiting Professor, and Fenwick McKelvey, the co-director of #AI2 at #ConcordiaUniversity for their leadership in designing the research process. Their work was supported by research team members Lindsay Rodgers and Robert Marinov. We're now embarking on the analysis stage and will continue to share our process and findings. #responsibleAI #strategicforesight #AIresearch #policy #implementation

🚀 Just wrapped up a great session on "AI Act: The Future is Now Leveraging AI Innovation" organized by VdA Vieira de Almeida and the Center for Responsible AI. Here are some key takeaways and my thoughts on the matter: 1️⃣ Funding and Implementation Challenges: There's a significant gap in understanding surrounding AI ACT, particularly regarding research funding and its economic impact on European businesses, especially SMEs. It's clear that without adequate support, many will struggle to comply. 2️⃣ Investing in Fundamental Research: Pedro Bizarro's emphasis on the need for increased investment in fundamental research resonated deeply with me. True innovation requires a strong foundation, and it's time to prioritize long-term research initiatives. 3️⃣ Rethinking Specialization: The million-dollar/euro question: Which future areas of research will lead to disruptive innovation? Noone knows. Fundamental research leads to innovation. Isn't it time to reconsider our approach to smart specialisation and reduce top-down interference in the definition of research programmes? After all, innovation thrives best when allowed to bloom freely. 4️⃣ Collaborative Data Sharing: Joseph Paton's insights on data-sharing alternatives struck a chord. Developing mechanisms that allow broader access to data, especially for entities lacking infrastructure, is vital for equitable progress. 5️⃣ Building Trust: Luis Filipe Coelho Antunes's reminder of the importance of federated data spaces highlights a fundamental issue: trust. Establishing trust among nations is key to effective collaboration in areas like healthcare. The session underscored the complexities ahead but also emphasized the urgency of action. As we navigate the intricacies of AI regulation and innovation, let's ensure inclusivity, foresight, and a commitment to fundamental research. The future is indeed now, and it's ours to shape. #AIAct #AIInnovation #ResearchFunding #FutureTech #LinkedInThoughts 💡

We are grateful to have welcomed the Unit of #Industry5.0& AI in Science from #DGR&I European Commission at our premises yesterday! It was an excellent opportunity for the policy makers, our researchers and industry partners Axelera AI & Prodrive Technologies to closely engage in deep conversations on future industrial policy and AI developments. Few take aways: 💡Universities are generating groundbreaking scientific knowledge and #cooperationwithindustry is key in taking this knowledge into applications and transform it into marketable products, good and services; 💡Universities are orchestrators of #regionalinnovationecosystems bringing the stakeholders together, creating value for the region and much beyond #4thGenerationUniversity 💡AI should be a tool to enhance our capabilities and develop it in regulatory environments that is safe for deployment. Universities are in a unique position to provide examples as we develop AI models with industry. 💡Europe needs to invest more focussed and by doing this, it keeps innovation going into a substantial way! Many thanks to everyone - we can conclude that the day was too short! 🟢The EU’s shift towards AI-driven #IndustrialPolicy presents opportunities to shape Europe’s #DigitalFuture, but it also comes with risks. Public investments could entrench tech giants' dominance and undermine #ClimateGoals. According to technology policy analyst Frederike Kaltheuner Europe must rethink its approach, and move towards tying public investments to societal goals, addressing concentrated power in the tech sector and ensuring innovation aligns with #PublicInterest.➡ https://lnkd.in/gweAqhBp Heinrich-Böll-Stiftung European Commission #AI

It's true. Technological progress brings many challenges, with the biggest one today being climate change and the enormous amount of energy needed if we all want to use AI at our fingerprints. However, I've tried to inject a good dose of optimism by advocating for artificial intelligence during the Tech Supreme Court event IADATES because I'm convinced that without progress, we face stagnation and consequently, no solutions. I'm pleased to continue these fascinating conversations with experts on the topic and honored to be a member of the EuropIA institute. It's up to us to regulate and harness AI to our advantage.
