🚀 The new ExPEDite project aims Enabling Positive Energy Districts #PEDs through #digitaltwins. OASC will join forces with the Institute of Energy Systems and Environment of Riga Technical University, leadpartner of the project, and 17 other partners to develop and integrate modular components that can be used to analyze and predict a district’s energy performance under various what-if scenarios. These components form a district Digital Twin, enabling not only a visualization of the built environment, but also real time information on energy flows and spatiotemporal optimization of the district’s energy needs. This tool allows for district planning actions to be designed, analyzed and compared, leading to evidence-based decision making. OASC is managing the dissemination of the project's results and evaluates the level of compliance of the ExPEDite Digital Twin solution with the relevant Living in EU #mims, according to Living-in.EU MIMs Plus specifications and approach, and will determine a minimum level to reach in order to guide the development of scalable and replicable components. Following the evaluation, and in the case of non-compliance, it will prescribe the necessary amendments for alignment with the MIMs. 🇱🇻 The pilot will be done in the Municipality of Riga where also the official kickoff on 15 and 16 February will take place. 👉 Follow the project on social media to stay tuned about the project's work: https://lnkd.in/dRZ8WjGU

In network industries requiring the utmost professional expertise (such as the energy industry), regulatory agency staff responsible for carrying out regulatory functions are expected to be specialised in the regulatory, business and technical environment of such a sector. This staff specialisation, however, does not necessarily have to be exercised within specialised, single-sector agencies. Even more, it is sometimes considered that joint regulation of more than one sector (regulatory domain) within a single agency may have benefits in terms of higher quality regulation or greater independence of the authority. I addressed this subject from a contemporary European perspective in a paper entitled “The Organisational Dilemma of National Regulatory Authorities in the EU Countries: Multiplicity Or Unity?” published in “Studia Iuridica”. My paper aims to examine the phenomenon of independent regulatory agencies tasked with the regulation of more than one regulatory domain, as well as the process of amalgamation of existing specialised authorities that leads to their creation. The study is carried out on agencies responsible for the regulation of energy, telecommunications, railways and audiovisual media, as well as competition protection. In the paper I have: · mapped the agencies from the above five domains currently operating in the EU Member States and created a typology of such authorities, consisting of single-purpose, multi-sector, and “super regulators”; · verified my hypothesis that the general consolidation trend of central government administration in Europe also applies to agencies in the EU Member States; · examined selected amalgamations of regulatory agencies in the form of mini case studies; · addressed the significance of the institutional form (consolidated or specialised) of agencies from the perspective of regulatory effectiveness, i.e. achieving the EU regulatory objectives. 🌟 Prof. Deepak Divan sparked deep reflection at the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) with his insights on the current energy paradigm and the necessary changes for realizing the new ecosystem emerging from the Clean Energy Transition! 🌟 Three days after receiving the prestigious IEEE Medal on Power Engineering in Boston, Prof. Deepak Divan landed in Luxembourg to engage us in profound discussions following his lecture on "The Power Grid as a Clean Ecosystem". As the director of the Center for Distributed Energy at Georgia Institute of Technology and a past president of the IEEE Power Electronics Society, Prof. Divan brought together his experiences from academia and industry to captivate us with his thoughts on the challenges of the Clean Energy Transition. He emphasized the need for visionary solutions that span not only technological aspects but also economic and regulatory dimensions. Prof. Divan explored various technological facets of the energy transition, highlighting how disruptive technological advances in energy technologies, coupled with cost reductions and the frenetic and exponential growth of renewable energy connections, are steering us towards a scenario that might appear overwhelming to traditional stakeholders, particularly in light of the ambitious targets established for 2050. He underscored the need to rethink the global operation of inverter-based resources (IBR), advocating for simple and collaborative rules to manage system complexity. Prof. Divan also reminded us that the energy transition should not leave anyone behind, advocating for solutions and measures in developed countries that ensure energy access for the 3 billion people living in extreme energy poverty. Couldn't agree more with you, Pedro! Today's ENERGY TRANSITION, is indeed going to be challenging and exciting both - exciting because we are going through this journey within our own life times. It is real and impacts us. On one hand, while we are fortunate to live in times where, if the ongoing Energy Transition is done right, one could usher in an era of clean and abundant energy for all - very soon - something that is affordable, flexible and reliable too - else we would have solved one problem only to create new ones. There is no single and simplistic prescription. It is important to understand nuances and interdependencies of doing it. And commercializing the upcoming ENERGY innovations to overcome some of the deep science and technology problems will be critical as well. Great you all had those conversations. This according to a new study released today (May 29) by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). This is a very revealing and detailed forecast of the growth in artificial intelligence (AI) and the rapidly growing demand for electricity by data center operations. Kudos to the principal EPRI investigators, Jordan Aljbour, Tom Wilson, Rick Moore, and Poorvi Patel. The 35-page report provides a four-scenario outlook with state-by-state details. Based on the ‘Higher-Growth’ scenario, electricity consumption by data centers is forecast to rise from about 152 million megawatt (MW) hours in 2023, to more than 403 million MWh in 2030 – an increase of 166%. Today, in terms of geographic concentration, only 15 states account for 80% of national data center load. The informative report highlights three essential strategies needed to support rapid data center expansion. They include deployment of better efficiency measures, better planning coordination, and better modeling.
