Almost all electric vehicles use rare-earth permanent-magnet synchronous motors, because these are the highest-performing motors by any metric. But mining and processing rare earth elements generally comes with environmental consequences, so researchers all over the world are trying to build powerful, compact motors that don't use rare earths. In this feature, three top researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory survey some of the best results and projects so far. https://lnkd.in/eZaZFgY6

With traditional squirrel cage induction motors used in industrial applications reaching their maximum efficiency design capabilities, new motor technology is required like WEG's W23 Sync+ combines permanent magnet (PM) and synchronous reluctance (SynRM) technologies to deliver optimum efficiency through strategically placed magnets on the rotor, creating its own magnetic field without the need of induced currents. #electricmotors https://lnkd.in/gwHX92UQ

In 2023, we at Rho Impact assessed and validated the impact potential of thousands of emerging climate technologies. One that certainly stood out from the crowd was Niron Magnetics, Inc. - and apparently TIME thought so too! In collaboration with our partners and friends at Volta Energy Technologies, we assessed Niron Magnetics, Inc. and the impact potential they could have on a variety of industries critical to our net zero transition. And the result? Critical magnets that are better for the planet and better for our pockets. Congratulations to the team at Niron Magnetics, Inc. and Volta Energy Technologies for the TIME award of "Best Inventions of 2023!" With 2024 soon coming to an end, who do you think will make the "Best Inventions of 2024" list? Maybe you? Rho Impact. You bring your WHY. We'll bring everything else (including everything you need to deliver commercial and climate impact - without the greenwashing). https://lnkd.in/eywEXhZ3 #sustainableenergy #sustainablemagnets #electrification #cleanearthmagnet #rareearthmetals #sustainablemining #netzero #climaterisk #esg

Sales Director at FoundOcean / Grouting for the offshore energy industries / "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn"
Magnets are a really important part of the green energy transition because they are able to store lots of energy. This makes them a prime material for manufacturing the batteries required for storing energy from renewable sources, to provide continuous power even without the sun shining or the wind blowing, and other aspects of renewable infrastructure. There has been a spike in demand for powerful, permanent rare-earth magnets, demonstrated by the striking statistic from Magnetics & Materials; the Earth will need 55,000 more tonnes of neodymium magnets than are likely to be available by 2030. This has prompted important conversations by experts at events like the International Workshop on Rare Earth and Future Permanent Magnets and their Applications, to explore alternatives. This might mean optimising the production process, using alternative materials, or even finding ways around using magnets in motors altogether. https://lnkd.in/eMscyrts #greenenergytransition #renewablesources #alternativematerials

Methane Monitoring is going to become easier with Eartheye Space Due to expected legislative changes and ESG guidelines, mining companies will be required to monitor and report their Methane emissions. Typically, sensors are installed in mineshafts but the emissions from newly exposed benches and stockpiles cannot be picked up by ground sensors. Without proper accounting, miners risk running afoul of environmental regulators and investors, which may cause reputational damage and increase the cost of capital. We are building an information feed that helps miners better understand their emissions through regular monitoring from space, and incorporating weather models to predict dispersal patterns. #MethaneMonitoring #SpaceTechnology #ESG #MiningIndustry 🌏 Eartheye Space makes Earth Observation uber easy 🛰 Ask for a demo at www.eartheye.space or register at tasking.eartheye.space 💲 Pay as you task, from your annual US$5,000 (minimum) credit ✅ Available for organisations of any size
