Almost all electric vehicles use rare-earth permanent-magnet synchronous motors, because these are the highest-performing motors by any metric. But mining and processing rare earth elements generally comes with environmental consequences, so researchers all over the world are trying to build powerful, compact motors that don't use rare earths. In this feature, three top researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory survey some of the best results and projects so far. https://lnkd.in/eZaZFgY6
