If the transition to a new energy regime isn't adeptly managed, warns Robert Charette, we could wind up with "a dystopian grid where energy costs are high and reliability is poor, decarbonization progress is stalled, and the economic gains that have been made over the last century are at risk." In a conversation with Deepak Divan of Georgia Institute of Technology, the two experts chart a path forward that would avoid the pitfalls https://lnkd.in/ek8xY967

The United States electrical grid is at risk and in need of both expansion and improvement. A 2022 Princeton University report warns that without an increase in transmission expansion beyond its recent rate of about 1% annually, more than 80% of the IRA’s emissions reductions could be lost. As Polsky states, “People don’t realize how fragile the grid is” . By investing in new technologies and implementing energy efficiency programs, we can improve the reliability, resiliency, and flexibility of the domestic power grid. Unless U.S. energy policy and industry practice is systemically shaped to intercept and exploit the exponential improvements in clean-energy technology and cost reductions now occurring, the United States could end up with the worst of all situations by 2040: a dystopian grid where energy costs are high and reliability is poor, decarbonization progress is stalled, and the economic gains that have been made over the last century are at risk.

This is an important article from Peter Behr of Politico’s E&E News drawing attention to the unprecedented challenges facing power grids. A huge uptake of new technologies such as heat pumps and EVs is critical for the clean energy transition, but it can’t be successful unless we free up space in our electrical grids for this influx of renewable power sources. We can do this by building additional infrastructure, but this takes time. We need to supplement that grid expansion by making it easier to identify and fix issues quickly, which will free up extra capacity needed urgently. As Jason Grumet, CEO of the American Clean Power Association, says in the article: “The future is around the builders and the fixers” https://lnkd.in/ee2UESUR

Brilliant reading from Azeem Azhar and Nathan Warren in yesterday's piece on the evolution of energy production. We are poised to see energy production become more distributed, with one national grid supplemented (or in some cases replaced) by lots of local ones. How you plan for such a future depends on your circumstances, but assuming that the way we get power is an eternal constant is likely to leave organisations caught out. https://lnkd.in/gTHuSB64

«To be blunt: The United States is trying to power a 21st century economy and withstand 21st century challenges with a 20th century electricity grid.... The country has made tangible progress over the past five years, but it is still woefully behind in building the transmission system that will not only meet US clean energy ambitions, but also deliver a more reliable, more resilient, and more equitable energy system. To get there will require holistic, forward-looking system planning to ensure grid investments are cost-effective, well-designed, and capable of meeting 21st century needs. And we need transparent and inclusive decisionmaking processes to make sure everyone benefits from a clean energy future.»
