It was a pleasure to contribute to CNN’s Laura Paddison article on land restoration efforts. We know that restoration, including regreening, when done correctly, is an essential component in the toolbox of environmental action on climate change, nature loss and pollution. This article points out the complexity and nuance involved in designing the right approach. That’s why the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration has released a set of clear principles, including on the need for a people-centred approach that can underpin all restoration activities and avoid potential pitfalls. This is what being part of #GenerationRestoration is all about: learning from the past to ensure a double win for people and planet. https://lnkd.in/gCcs7nPQ

Traditional knowledge can provide a wealth of insights into and solutions to multiple development challenges that complement modern approaches, deepen our understanding of the cultures and environments we work in and the populations and communities we work with. Building resilience to #ClimateChange is one of these areas. The article below by Philip Malsale, a senior climatologist with the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP), provides telling, real-life examples of why #TraditionalKnowledge is relevant in the fight against the #ClimateCrisis, how practices passed down from generation to generation can provide early warning systems for tropical cyclones, contribute to adaptation solutions in a changing environment or strengthen weather and #climate information and forecasting. It provides a great illustration of how modern #science and technology can combine with traditional knowledge for concrete #ClimateAction and more holistic, inclusive and sustainable outcomes. #SustainableDevelopment https://lnkd.in/g-svVj4d

"Building Climate Resilience in Rural Coastal Communities on Virginia’s Eastern Shore through The Nature Conservancy’s Coastal Resilience Program" 🌐Coastal Resilience Webinar Series 📅22 October 2024, 14.00 pm CEST 🎙️Speaker Susan Bates, Coastal Science Program Manager for the Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve (VVCR) office of The Nature Conservancy. Abstract The Coastal Resilience Program at The Nature Conservancy (TNC) was designed to integrate a community engagement approach with a web mapping decision support tool that is delivered through a network of practitioners around the world supporting hazard mitigation, climate adaptation, and conservation planning. Components of this program include the online Coastal Resilience Mapping Tool, demonstration of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and research on the value of those NBS. Examples of the implementation of each of these components at the Virginia Coast Reserve (VCR) will be discussed in this presentation. 🔗 Register to attend: https://ow.ly/t6bN50TLsJs Decade Collaborative Centre for Coastal Resilience UN Ocean Decade Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna

Resilient landscapes are made up of a fully functioning #WaterCycle, #ecosystem functions, and many types of natural habitats, such as #wetlands or #forests. 🌳🌲🌳 When these work together as an integrated landscape, #ClimateChange mitigation and adaptation are at their highest. Discover how restoration initiatives are beginning to take root, thanks to SIWI's led project #LoCoFoRest (Locally Controlled Forest Restoration). ⏩ https://lnkd.in/gYaKjVjX 🌳🌲🌳 A partnership with Skogsstyrelsen and Eco-Innovation Foundation, funded by Sida. --- #SIWI #WaterGovernance #ForestRestoration #LandscapeRestoration #Climate #Mitigation #Adaptation #WaterInLandscapes

Event of the week: Don't miss this important webinar on Natural Climate Solutions (NCS) - "The Critical Need for Effective Conservation and Restoration", hosted by USN4C member 1t.org US Chapter. NCS are critical to address climate change. Within the NCS hierarchy, protecting existing ecosystems takes priority due to its quick, low-cost, and high per-hectare mitigation benefit. Additionally, restoration serves as a cost-effective carbon removal strategy when implemented correctly. Both strategies require urgent investment and resources to unlock their full potential. Join experts Susan Cook-Patton, Ph.D., Senior Forest Restoration Scientist at USN4C-member The Nature Conservancy and Thomas W. Crowther from Crowther Lab | ETH Zurich, to review some of the foundational research and the latest guidance on effective conservation and restoration, and what questions you can ask when evaluating potential implementation projects. 📅 : Thurs. May 9th, 2024 ⏰ : 1-2 pm ET REGISTER HERE: https://lnkd.in/eagAEyDC #NaturalClimateSolutions #ClimateAction #Conservation #Restoration

🌊 Restoring Blue Carbon Ecosystems: A Vital Step for Climate Change Mitigation🌿 Excited to share our latest publication on the restoration of blue carbon ecosystems! Our review, now published in Cambridge Prisms: Coastal Futures, explores the immense potential of mangroves, tidal marshes, and seagrasses in sequestering carbon and mitigating climate change. Key Highlights: - Significant Carbon Sequestration: Restoration of these ecosystems can substantially increase carbon stocks and positively impact gaseous fluxes. - Global Potential**: With millions of hectares suitable for restoration, these efforts could remove 841 Tg CO2e per year from the atmosphere, equivalent to ~3% of global fossil fuel emissions. - Challenges and Opportunities: Successful large-scale restoration requires overcoming socioeconomic, governance, and biophysical constraints. This article provides valuable insights for policymakers, environmental managers, and conservationists aiming to leverage natural climate solutions to meet global climate targets. #ClimateChange #BlueCarbon #EcosystemRestoration #Mangroves #TidalMarshes #Seagrasses #Sustainability #EnvironmentalScience #NaturalClimateSolutions

Unveiling the ZOBLUC project Seagrass meadows are cherished for their ability to promote biodiversity, boost coastal protection, and improve water quality. They are also remarkably adept at capturing and storing carbon dioxide (CO₂), making them a powerful ally in the fight against climate change. Zostera marina as a Blue Carbon Sink in the Baltic Sea (ZOBLC) – is a result of the combined efforts of several institutions. €6 million Fund from the German Federal Environment Ministry’s Nature-based Climate Action Programme (ANK) and state funds, aims to unravel the secrets of seagrass meadows. The Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas 2024: The State of the World's Peatlands in Maps 🗺️ Despite their critical role in mitigating #climatechange and providing essential ecosystem services, peatlands face significant threats and remain among the most poorly understood and under-monitored ecosystems globally. The Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas from UN Environment Programme evaluates the current status of #peatlands worldwide and highlights the threats they face from #urbanisation, #industrialisation, land use changes, and climate change. By bridging the gap between science and policy, it identifies threats and opportunities, enabling informed decisions that prioritise their #sustainable management. Additionally, the Atlas highlights the global potential for peatland #conservation and restoration, with a focus on regions particularly vulnerable to future planning and development. 🇺🇳 Read the Atlas👇 https://lnkd.in/eBfuiriR

🌊 Participation in the REST-COAST Project Half-Year report Meeting 🌊 I was pleased to attend the half-year report meeting of the REST-COAST European research project. The project's objective is to restore and protect coastal areas in Europe through the implementation of innovative and sustainable solutions. At our pilot site, the Arcachon Bay, we followed a hybrid approach that combined physical indicators from numerical modelling with socio-economic indicators. In light of changing climatic conditions and proposed restoration scenarios, our findings demonstrate that large-scale restoration can enhance sediment dynamics, water quality and the ecosystem services provided by seagrass beds 🌿. Large-scale restoration will contribute to more effective climate adaptation and reduced coastal risks. By working together, we are taking a step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for our coasts. 🌍 💧 #RestCoast #Research #Environment #Innovation #Sustainability #NatureBasedSolution #NBS
