Came across a job listing today that made me do a double-take, the role name: "IT-Technician ".. a role requiring a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science! 🤯 The daily grind? Setting up new computers, managing IT support tickets, and maintaining an inventory of tech gear. Pretty standard tech tasks, right? But here's the kicker: apart from this hefty degree requirement, the role involves "configuring new Mac and Windows computers," "installing and tailoring software applications," and "promptly managing IT support tickets." Essential duties that many skilled technicians can perform with their eyes closed. While I understand the value of a solid educational background, isn't it a bit much to ask for that, though crucial, are pretty much technician-level? This approach might be overlooking the wealth of talent out there, capable and experienced, but perhaps not holding that specific degree...

The demands of data collection can be taxing for even experienced fielders, but what about new techs? Crews face obvious challenges by nature of their job, and dealing with bugs, heat, cold, rain, and more is part of their job description. But staying aware of your surroundings takes its own toll. Navigating confused (and sometimes suspicious) homeowners requires tact and grace. And the actual process of collecting data for eight to ten hours a day (or more!) can be mentally exhausting. While your rockstar fielders may take on the toughest parts of data collection with ease, getting new staff up to speed and comfortable can take months. To help you train new team members quickly and effectively, we’re developing a boot camp that walks first-time field techs through the OSP process. With the right onboarding, you can turn inexperienced staff into experts faster than ever. To tackle even the toughest days of data collection, field technicians need the resources and training to succeed. Give us a shout at hello@katapultengineering.com to learn more about our field boot camp!

Meet, Connor, a Component Analyst Technician on our team. What does a component analyst do? He performs destructive testing on microcircuits to analyze the data and report the results. Making sure the data results are within the requirements of the method we are performing for the destructive testing. What’s something unexpected about this job? You don’t need an electrical or DPA (destructive physical analysis) background to begin your career as a DPA analyst. What do you enjoy most about your job? The challenge of it! There’s a lot of on-the-job training, and ongoing training. I enjoy problem-solving and the thrill of completing a difficult DPA job. The most rewarding part? I appreciate how team-oriented we are; we work together to achieve the best outcomes. It field technician 101 tips "Base level probable causes first" In my many years of experience as an IT technician, there's one troubleshooting approach that has always helped me diagnose issues more efficiently. That approach is ALWAYS check the base level probable causes first. I once had a customer that called me to report that his printer would not print. He turned it on, restarted the print spool service and reinstalled drivers, but to no avail, he still couldn't get the printer to work. I made a service call to his home to check out the problem. I begin to examine the printer. Naturally, I first begin to examine the printer for base level probable causes. Sure enough, I spotted the issue within moments. The USB cable at first glance appeared to be plugged in. After checking again, I noticed that the USB cable was only plugged in half way. I got it plugged in properly and that was it. He slapped his head in embarrassment and kept saying man that was it!? My reply as I giggled was "Yes sir! Now you know the bill will be the same right??" lol. Maybe save the jokes like that for known customers that don't mind a joke or two, but the moral of the story.. don't underestimate simplicity. #ittechnician #troubleshooting #computerskills
