🚢 Maritime traffic in Amsterdam during its quinquennial SAIL event. The apparent chaos conceals a remarkable order governed by societal rules. This extends beyond humans to intricate systems observed in ant colonies and bee hives. Reflecting on these structured behaviors prompts a consideration of our actions on the road. Instances of traffic rule violations and road rage are unfortunately common in many regions. By recognizing the broader societal framework that promotes order and safety, individuals can contribute to a harmonious and secure road environment, reinforcing the understanding that adherence to rules benefits everyone on the journey.

Quiet Sound’s collaborative effort reduced underwater noise by 45% with voluntary commercial vessel slowdowns through the Admiralty Inlet corridor in Puget Sound between Whidbey Island and the Olympic Peninsula. Underwater noise is a key concern for Southern Resident killer whales, in addition to reduced Chinook salmon populations and poor water quality. By working across private and public sectors, 70% of vessels decreased their speed during an 80-day slowdown with minimal effects on maritime trade and no safety impacts. https://lnkd.in/gZ8Tueh5

Hundreds of thousands of vessels crisscross our oceans at any moment. 🛳 It is truly impressive that the maritime industry maintains such an excellent safety record, and seafarers are Good at their job! Unfortunately, accidents do happen, not because seafarers are not good at what they do, but due to a plethora of underlying reasons, such as poor situational awareness or information overload. The OCEAN Project aims to improve navigational safety, and sustainability through: ▪ Improvement in training and promotion of good practices for safe navigation. ▪ Creation of a central repository of data (S Environmentalist, Fishing and Leisure sector, Scientific Community, and Seafarers). ▪ Innovative navigational technologies. The OCEAN Project is co-funded by the European Commission and UK Research and Innovation; bringing together Europe’s maritime experts, to improve navigational safety and sustainability.
