Organic instigator. Builder of sustainable & sustaining enterprises. Solver of complex problems. Lover of abstract art, family, friends & pie - not necessarily in that order
One of my favorite books remains The Tokyo Montana Express, written by Richard Brautigan between 1976 and 1978. It contains 131 short stories written during a period when he was spending time in both Japan and Montana. A note at the beginning explains that the 'chapters' are akin to stations along the tracks of a mythical Tokyo-Montana Express train line, and the first-person narration is from the voices of each of those stations along the way. I think of this season of the #Organic community being on a long train ride together as we stop along various industry events along our shared journey. As we approach the back half of winter, many of us are already in the front end of the 2024 season of conferences, trade shows, and other industry events which are essential to lifting spirits, finding opportunities, and connecting with old friends. I'm just now returning from nearly back-to-back trips to San Antonio for the annual Accredited Certifiers Association training and then to BIOFACH / VIVANESS in Nuremberg, Germany. At the ACA event, it became abundantly clear that the March 19th SOE deadline is real and imposing, with the NOP reaffirming sobering and well considered expectations about what the community will find on March 20th. The certification community heard the messages loud and clear and are doing their level best to serve the wave of new applicants as well as currently certified operators developing fraud prevention plans for the first time. The pressures on certifiers are palpable and weighty, and I suspect we'll be seeing changes in the ACA landscape as SOE begins its long march of implementation. 5,490 miles away at Biofach, a vibrant and spirited global community came together to explore trade in organic ingredients, products, and services at a scale unlike anywhere else in the world, with products and innovations represented from 100 countries—picture the organic section of Expo West scaled up to be larger than Expo West in total. The conference sessions were robust, engaging, and well researched, confirming that the global organic trade and policy community demands substance and rigor in their education and advocacy endeavors as well as in their commercial efforts. Next up for me is #ExpoWest, and I look forward to diving in again this year, no doubt to throngs of attendees and exhibitors chasing dreams, making deals, and exploring opportunities of all descriptions. With its sister Expo East now no more, it will be interesting to see any discernable changes in a few short weeks. It comforts me to know that despite the varying routes we take, we share similar visions, travel similar paths, and are looking to bring similar growth and benefits to the world...more organic ground, crops, food, textiles, and other goods to more people, in more places, doing more collective good work. If we can help you with your organic journey, we're here for you. 'See you out there. https://lnkd.in/gYhSH8v6

Europe needs to grow more legumes for covering its protein needs. And it must happen in a sustainable manner. During a first coordination meeting between the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and the Institut fir Biologesch Landwirtschaft an Agrarökologie Luxemburg, equipment and the methodology for measuring greenhouse gas emissions in lupin plots (in the background, just after sowing) were shared. Thanks to the European Union for funding the LEGENDARY Project (KnowLEdGE creation and iNcreasing acreage of legumes in Diversified cropping systems by quAntification of theiR ecosYstem services) led by UGent. https://lnkd.in/eHmeQnKK #LISTEnvironment

🥚 BREADCRUMB project partner Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen ( #UCPH) recently visited several egg producers and factories to gain insights into their operations. 📹 Watch this short video to get an overview of how we interact with the value chain of eggs and egg products. #FoodChainSolutions #FoodWaste #FoodMarketingStandards #SuboptimalFood #SocialAcceptance #EUfunded #HorizonEurope #EUresearch #foodwastereduction #PrivateMarketingStandards
In light of #InternationalFoodWasteDay, at University of Copenhagen Københavns Universitet - University of Copenhagen Department of Geosciences and Natural Resource Management, University of Copenhagen, we take the opportunity to flash one of our research projects in that domain. In the Breadcrumb project along with 21 Partners European partners from 7 countries, we study how current ways of looking at food quality influences the amounts and types of food waste. And the best way to start that kind of research is, by talking to practitioners and try to understand the whole of the value chain. Get an impression of how we work with the value chain of egg and egg products in this short video. 🌊🐟 Exciting News Alert: Dive into the World of Aqua Feeds and Marine Ingredients! 🐠🦐 We're thrilled to announce our upcoming discussion on " Aqua Feeds and Marine Ingredients" as our key topic under Health session Submit your abstract under this session https://lnkd.in/gBfQnKH8 Attention all marine enthusiasts, aquaculture aficionados, and seafood lovers! We're thrilled to announce that Aqua Feeds and Marine Ingredients are taking centre stage in our discussions. As we delve into this fascinating topic, we'll explore the crucial role these elements play in sustaining aquatic life, supporting aquaculture industries, and nourishing our planet. 🌱 The Power of Aqua Feeds: Aqua feeds are a vital component in aquaculture, providing essential nutrients for the growth and development of various aquatic species. From fish to crustaceans and beyond, these specialized feeds are formulated to meet the dietary requirements of each species at different stages of their lifecycle. Whether it's optimizing growth rates, enhancing coloration, or improving overall health, aqua feeds are tailored to ensure optimal nutrition and sustainable aquaculture practices. 🐟 Marine Ingredients: At the heart of aqua feeds lie marine ingredients sourced from the rich bounty of the ocean. Fish meal, fish oil, krill, and algae are among the key components that contribute to the nutritional profile of aqua feeds. These ingredients not only provide essential proteins, fats, and micronutrients but also play a crucial role in maintaining the ecological balance of marine ecosystems. Sustainable sourcing practices and innovative technologies are shaping the future of marine ingredient production, ensuring responsible utilization of marine resources for generations to come. 🌎 Sustainability and Innovation: As stewards of the ocean, it's imperative to prioritize sustainability in aqua feed production and marine ingredient sourcing. From reducing reliance on wild-caught fish for feed ingredients to exploring alternative protein sources such as insect meal and plant-based proteins, the industry is continuously evolving to minimize its environmental footprint. Furthermore, ongoing research and innovation are driving the development of novel feed formulations and production techniques aimed at enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting environmental stewardship. Join us as we embark on this exciting journey into the depths of Aqua Feeds and Marine Ingredients! Together, let's dive deeper, learn more, and champion sustainability in aquaculture for the well-being of our oceans and future generations. #AquaFeeds #MarineIngredients #Sustainability #Aquaculture #OceanConservation #RAS #Barramundi #sustainability #Fishfarming #seafood #shrimp #hatchery #mussels #aquaponics #oysters #oceanography #offshore #tuna #ausyfish #jadeperch #probiotics #aquaculture #Aquaponics #aquafarm2024 #aquaculture

The geography of #horticulture #ValueChains is changing. Intra-regional and domestic value chains are expanding vis-à-vis traditional North-South #GlobalValueChains. Our newly published article in the Journal of Economic Geography unpacks #power as a key dimension of value chain #governance. We reveal constraints to lead firms’ ability to directly exercise bargaining power; and shifts towards institutional power (involving a wide range of lead firm, supplier, state, and civil society actors) in a context of intersecting value chains. It has been an absolute pleasure working with my co-authors Giovanni Pasquali, Stephanie Barrientos and Dr. Maggie Opondo over the last few months and years. This paper is one of many coming out of our the #ESRC funded project "Shifting South: decent work in regional value chains and South-South trade" https://lnkd.in/eVFJY9bi
