Community-led housing: how to deliver housing for people and the planet --> https://lnkd.in/e6efaPMG Safe and secure housing is a foundation for human development, yet few know of or prioritise community-led housing as a mechanism to successfully tackle the global housing crisis. The treatment of housing as a commodity and the persistence and often expansion of informal settlements is restricting people's access to adequate housing. Across the global North and South, this global housing crisis has become a priority among a growing number of civil society organisations, as well as across policy, finance and philanthropy. IIED and World Habitat are partnering with community-led housing champions and housing justice movements to ensure that policymakers, financiers and philanthropists discover, understand and engage with community-led housing as a key policy tool in the provision of housing. #cities #CommunityLed #housing

We recently partnered with Clarion Housing Group to shine a light on how social housing providers are #MoreThanALandlord. We are committed to helping Communities thrive, but we want to be more than a ‘sticking plaster’ for solving social problems. We need the right support to do even more for our Communities. Greg Reed, our Chief Executive Officer stated: “The ‘why’ of investing in thriving Communities will never change for Places for People, but the how’ must. “The public support available to vulnerable groups has deteriorated and we are having to step in. We and others want to urgently look at the ways in which vital state relief is both resourced and delivered at Community level.” Read more about the vital role of social housing providers and the changes we’re calling for in the New Statesman: https://bit.ly/3XKV4mU #MoreThanALandlord #SocialHousing #HousingCrisis #UKHousing #CostOfLivingCrisis

Western Sydney Community Forum responds to the NSW Budget 2024 “Last year, Western Sydney Community Forum called on the NSW Government to take bolder steps to address the growing inequity that disproportionally impacts Western Sydney. This year’s Budget represents such a bold step. The NSW Government has announced an investment of $5.1 billion towards achieving the target of 8,400 new and refurbished homes – half of which will specifically service women and children escaping domestic violence – to be complemented by a further $528 million for homelessness services. This is overwhelmingly good news and will be warmly welcomed in Western Sydney, where current housing stock remains inadequate both in number and quality. So, at the macro level, it could be said that Western Sydney has been well served by this Budget. However, at the level of families, individuals and communities it remains to be seen if these large-scale investments will translate to improvements in the lives of people in Western Sydney.” Read the full article by Western Sydney Community Forum, Acting Chief Executive Officer Joshua Bird here: https://lnkd.in/gPSv-ySa #NSWBudget2024 #WesternSydney #WSCF

📰This week for the Wednesday weekly roundup… 1,300 property professionals brave the cold to end youth homelessness at LandAid’s biggest ever SleepOut. Fuelled by over 2,500 cups of tea, participants have so far raised over £700,000. Housing 2024 will run a session on ‘Permanent solutions to the temporary accommodation crisis’, making sure we find permanent solutions to provide stable and secure homes for all. https://lnkd.in/e-zNzgrq In response to the consultation of Awaab’s Law. The G15 members are investing record sums into the condition of our existing homes to ensure that they are safe, warm, and comfortable for residents. Attend our session on Wednesday 26 June to explore the full implications of the proposed changes from both a landlord and tenant perspective. You can also hear from G15’s chair Fiona Feltcher-smith at Housing. https://lnkd.in/eQbys4ce While the challenges of adapting buildings to rising temperatures are significant, CIBSE stresses the importance of understanding the comfort and health thresholds of vulnerable populations. In June we make sure to look at how asset management and development teams can work together to understand whole life carbon emissions and ensure new build homes will be resilient to rising temperatures and flood risk down the line. Julie Godefroy, head of net zero policy at CIBSE will also dig into property data to deliver carbon and cost savings. https://lnkd.in/eSjU6HsR “The Spring Budget was a missed opportunity to build new homes and improve the ones we have, to make them more energy efficient, which would have stimulated economic growth across the county”, says the Federation of Master Builders (FMB). #Housing2024 is your chance to hear from mayors, policy makers, local authority leaders and government agencies as they discuss the implications of the Spring Budget for social housing. https://lnkd.in/ebpJe6jP Thank you to our partners as we come together, discuss and collaborate, to identify solutions and speak with one voice to those framing the debate. 🏡 This #RuralHousingWeek is one year since Commonweal joined the #RuralHomelessnessCounts Coalition. Commonweal is pleased to fund and support English Rural's feasibility study investigating how a Housing First model of housing and intensive support could operate in rural areas, set to launch by autumn. 🔎 The research aims to identify how existing Housing First projects can be adapted to address the specific challenges that rural communities face, including limited access to services. 📈 Due to high house prices and a shortage of affordable housing in rural areas, there has been a surge in rural homelessness, with a 40% rise in the last five years. Find out what the Coalition has been up to this past year ➡ https://lnkd.in/eu4P8jaj

A home is so important for individuals and families to be able to achieve so many things. High-quality social housing is crucial for ensuring that everyone has access to safe, affordable, and dignified living spaces. It provides stability and security, fostering a sense of belonging and community. Good social housing contributes to physical and mental well-being, reduces inequalities, and promotes social cohesion by creating environments where people can thrive and fulfill their potential. Investing in high-quality social housing is an investment in people's quality of life., We need to invest in quality housing, where people can flourish and thrive..
New research from St Vincent de Paul Society NSW and The McKell Institute is calling for a significant investment in social housing to meet current and future need. Right now, social housing accounts for just 3.8 per cent of all housing nationally and 4.5 per cent in NSW. The lack of available and affordable properties is having dire consequences with specialist homelessness services experiencing high levels of demand and reduced capacity to meet community need. “We see families sleeping in cars with young children or worse in tents in the bush,” said Anna Scott, Acting Director, Homelessness and Housing. The solution to homelessness is simple: more affordable housing. Social housing is the main form of affordable housing we have in the UK, but we don't have enough of it. Policies such as Right to Buy have decimated the existing stock, with nowhere enough new housing to be built to get us back to the level we need. It's not a cheap ask, but it is a simple one, the government should financially incentivise the development of more social housing. It's Step 6 in our 10 step policy checklist for the #PlanForThe136k campaign. You can read all 10 steps on the campaign website: https://buff.ly/4d3H7oX

Stepping Stone accommodation is affordable housing that young people can live in when recovering from homelessness. It's often supported accommodation that people live in for 6-18 months, with rent fixed at a genuinely affordable rate linked to young people's actual income. People then move on to longer term independent housing. All the evidence shows this works, it sustainably solves homelessness for young people forced into desperation and danger. But these projects are small, oversubscribed and not widely available. Step 5 of our #PlanForThe136k is for the government to meaningfully invest in this model and make it available to more young people who need it. You can read the full list of policy recommendations here: https://buff.ly/4d3H7oX
