As I approach the midpoint of my MBA International Business program from UPES, I’m excited to share my transformative experience so far. The past few months has been filled with rich learning and practical experiencing the things I learned in the classroom. From the beginning, the course has seamlessly combined theoretical knowledge with practical experience. The engaging curriculum has given me a thorough understanding of global business strategies, understanding the international market dynamics, and cross-cultural management. Each module is thoughtfully crafted to challenge and enlighten my viewpoints, helping me develop a well-rounded understanding of the complexities inherent in international business. The most valuable aspect of this program has been the hands-on experience acquired through internships and industrial visits. My internship at Learn With Fraternity Pvt Ltd provided me with the opportunity to collaborate closely with industry leaders identifying there needs as well as understanding the wants and the expectations of the customers, translating classroom theories into the real-world applications, and hone essential skills in market analysis, strategic planning and Leadership as well. Furthermore, the industrial visits to JNPA- Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority – Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority offered me direct insight into the workings of port operations and supply chain. Whereas, the visit to NSE India was equally fruitful. There is got to know that how financial market and stocks operate. Last but not the least I want to thank my college in order to provide me such great opportunities. The guidance and support from faculty and mentors have been instrumental in my development, helping me navigate complex business challenges and grow throughout the program. Looking ahead, I’m excited to build on the skills and knowledge I’ve gained so far. For the coming year, I’m aiming to deepen my expertise in global supply chain management and international trade regulations while working on impactful projects that tackle real-world business challenges. I’m optimistic about the opportunities ahead and confident that the rest of the program will be just as rewarding and enriching as before. But many succeed with average grades by building strong profiles. ↳ Foreign Exchange: If this is one of your goals, grades matter. They’re a big part of your profile weightage. ↳ Holistic Growth: Networking, committees, case competitions and live projects are just as important as grades. ↳ Real-World Application: Grades show subject expertise, but recruiters care more about how you apply that knowledge. ↳ Stay Above the Threshold: It's always a good idea to stay above a certain grade threshold (~70%) to keep opportunities open. Management Trainee Program - The Rise , The Fall and in between Degree from a Top Tier Institute, Placement in Day Zero Company and getting into a coveted Management Trainee Program pretty much sums up a successful journey as a MBA student , however what has shaped my perspective in the past few years of having handled these programs. I have seen it is run as a passion project: where companies fight for slots on campus , throw money sometimes outside the internal parity promise " stints" to students on campus and the result is a very high attrition at the end of 1st year . If we see data most of the companies have a very high attrition in this cohort, the vision of building a "leadership pipeline" or becoming the " Employer of choice" on campus is something that should be carefully evaluated the first question is does the company even need fresh talent from campus, second question is what do you do with them once you get them from campus, do you really want to differentiate and accelerate the career trajectory different from other employees and last how is the ROI calculated for this. There are companies who have successfully navigated this and have most senior positions filled with fresh graduates while there are others who fight for slot every year, get people. are not able to set the right expectations and end up losing the time and talent and the cycle repeats. Joining a B-School?? Worried about what to expect in the next 2 years?? As I reflect on my time at XLRI, I am filled with gratitude for the experiences, knowledge, and connections I have gained. Here are some key takeaways from my journey so far: 1. Academics: The curriculum at XLRI, or any B-school, is rigorous and transformative. There will be courses that suit your previous work experience—in my case, probability or operations—and there will be courses that will be completely new, such as finance. It may seem intimidating at first, but I personally feel that anyone can ace any course irrespective of their background if they put in the effort, especially in projects and assessments (and believe me, there are a lot of them). 😅 2. Extracurricular Activities: Beyond academics, a B-school like XLRI offers numerous opportunities for personal growth. For me, being part of the student council and interacting with students across committees and admin has been a highlight. These activities have helped me develop leadership skills and a sense of community, along with an opportunity to interact with not only my batch but with admin and professors as well. 3. Networking Opportunities: XLRI's strong alumni network and mentorship programs have been incredibly beneficial, especially during the Summer Internship Placement (SIP) season. You can reach out to seniors and super seniors for tips on interviews, CV prep, and live projects. These connections have provided me with guidance, support, and opportunities to grow professionally. 4. SIP Prep and Live Projects: Preparation for the Summer Internship Placements (SIP) and engaging in live projects have been crucial parts of my MBA journey. The rigorous SIP prep sessions, mock interviews, and CV workshops conducted by seniors and alumni have been invaluable. Additionally, live projects have offered practical exposure and the chance to apply classroom learnings to real-world scenarios, enhancing my problem-solving and analytical skills. As I continue my MBA journey, I am excited to apply these learnings and experiences to my career. I was trying to take a look at Management Sciences Department/School of Shoolini University...website...content...faculty members...courses...research done, etc. But practically impossible to do any of above...the website now self-navigates directing all efforts and objectives, to admission cycle. Did not look different from most others...the omnipresent omniscient chat bot...makes the navigating experience difficult to impossible. I know website information/intent is not the only factor. Here is IIMA https://www.iima.ac.in/ There is sensible and tangible calmness, peace of mind at IIMA. XLRI again is not too good...but not too noisy either. XIM here... https://xim.edu.in/ NM here https://xim.edu.in/ I will rate it positively... A basic rudimentary approach...but effective. A similar approach was used back in 2005 in judging e-business readiness for business organisation's...whether balanced and focused on all six stakeholders...customer...supplier...share holder...community...govt and ...finally employees. For a B-School it can be faculty members, students, + alumni...community...employers/internship providers...and new admission seekers...balancing all stakeholders as in balanced scorecard. I am indeed pained by these faculty members congratulatory messages... they can, most of them, have an iota of thinking themselves on what good, bad and ugly looks like. Trust your knowledge first...then trust Times Higher Education...QS...then external quality media...local rankings...and last is what universities self-claim in their websites. Pre-MBA Preparation Since the admissions to MBA institutes are out, I thought I'd decode what all one can prepare as a part of pre-MBA preparation. I personally tried to go through the following before joining Indian Institute of Management Bangalore - 1. Collecting CV points: For students in both 1-year and 2-year MBA programs, one thing that'll start in the upcoming couple of months will be CV preparation. Hence, I'd suggest mulling over your work, internships, certificates, extra and co-curriculars, etc 2. Basics of Accounting: For someone from an engineering background, this is kind of a must. As there'll be students from commerce and finance background, they'll quickly ramp-up when these accounting principles are discussed in classes. Hence, I'd suggest watching YouTube videos of accounting, from class 11th / 12th (CBSE) 3. Basic of PPT and Excel: MBA is about presentations (individual and group). Getting a feel for PPT making and basic Excel operations are a must. 4. Relax a little: I understand all the above pointers might be a bit overwhelming, but it's also time to introspect on what you have achieved.
