HIV Treatment as Prevention: Another major way that HIV transmission can be prevented is by the method known as HIV treatment as prevention or TasP. This means taking HIV medicine by a person who is HIV positive to prevent transmission of HIV to someone who is HIV negative through sex. This has been proven to be true based on several large research studies spanning over many years in which discordant couples (male-female, and male-male couples where one is HIV positive and the other is HIV negative) were studied, and no HIV transmissions were observed when the HIV positive partner is virally suppressed. Simply put, HIV cannot be transmitted from HIV positive person who has undetectable viral load to HIV negative person through sex. We call this U=U, meaning undetectable=untransmittable. #hivprevention #hiv #hivmedicine #hivvirus #hivdoctor #hivnegative #hivpositive

Today is HIV Is Not a Crime Awareness Day Ending HIV criminalization laws is crucial to ending the epidemic. Today is an opportunity to amplify the voices of those who have been criminalized based on their HIV status. Living with HIV is not a crime, but in more than 30 U.S. states, people are being imprisoned due to their HIV status. HIV criminalization laws consist of using a person’s positive HIV status in a criminal prosecution, increasing charges or punishments because the person has HIV. These laws not only undermine public health efforts by deterring people from seeking HIV testing/treatment, but also stigmatize those living with HIV and the communities most impacted by HIV. The uptake of HIV testing among young men aged 15-24 in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is low, despite multi-sectoral approaches to HIV preventing HIV. In this study, only 17.1% of young men in PNG have been tested for HIV, suggesting a high unmet need for this group to be tested for HIV. There is a need for youth-friendly HIV/STI education and tailored sensitization programs to enable more accessible and affordable HIV testing services. Furthermore, outreach and community-based testing programs for young men in rural and prioritized areas requiring urgent prevention interventions are feasible options in PNG and similar settings with high HIV prevalence. #hiv #hivtesting #hivprevention #youngmen #png The full article: https://lnkd.in/gPMaAWA5

STIGMA AND DISCRIMINATION IN THE CONTEXT OF HIV/AIDS @ What is HIV stigma? HIV stigma is negative attitudes and beliefs about people with HIV. It is the prejudice that comes with labeling an individual as part of a group that is believed to be socially unacceptable. Here are a few examples: 1. Believing that only certain groups of people can get HIV 2. Making moral judgments about people who take steps to prevent HIV transmission 3. Feeling that people deserve to get HIV because of their choices @ What is discrimination? While stigma refers to an attitude or belief, discrimination is the behaviors that result from those attitudes or beliefs. HIV discrimination is the act of treating people living with HIV differently than those without HIV. Here are a few examples: 1. A health care professional refusing to provide care or services to a person living with HIV 2. Refusing casual contact with someone living with HIV 3. Socially isolating a member of a community because they are HIV positive 4. Referring to people as HIVers or Positives

One of the biggest global public health concerns is HIV, and there is a concerted worldwide effort to stop new HIV infections and guarantee that everyone who is afflicted has full access to treatment. The National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), in collaboration with partners, organized a three-day National HIV Conference with the subject "Accelerating HIV Prevention to End AIDS through Innovation and Community Engagement" with the aim of improving HIV prevention programs. A session of the conference with the title "Advancing HIV prevention Strategies for people who inject drugs (PWID): A focus on harm reduction in Nigeria" in Which the presenters emphasized how critical it is to strengthen HIV prevention tactics in order to end AIDS. At the end of the event, there was a loud cry for the inclusion of young voices and the use of creative approaches in the #HIV Response. #NationalHIVconference2024, #ENDAIDS, #hivawareness #hivprevention #youthinnovation. Why is access to #HIV self-testing important? 🔺 People at high risk of HIV are encouraged to test frequently. 🔺 This includes priority populations, such as people who use drugs, sex workers, and LGBTI people. 🔺 But people from these groups often face stigma, discrimination, and even criminalisation if they seek an HIV test at a clinic. By being able to collect self-tests from convenient locations, or receive them from peers, people can and test and read results in private, which provides more access to HIV testing. MedAccess is proud to partner with Wondfo and the Clinton Health Access Initiative, Inc. to introduce Wondfo's HIV self-test at a $1 ceiling price for public sector purchasers in 140 low- and middle-income countries. https://lnkd.in/eqVQ8aNA

In a landmark move, Australia has signed on to Prevention Access Campaign's Multinational Undetectable=Untransmittable (U=U) Call-To-Action, recognising and committing to embedding U=U into the national HIV response. 'U=U' refers to the fact that when a person living with HIV is on effective antiretroviral treatment for HIV, they will reach an ‘undetectable’ viral load and will be unable to transmit the virus to sexual partners. Alexis Apostolellis, CEO of ASHM, said becoming a signatory to Call-To-Action will further empower Australia’s HIV healthcare workforce and people living with HIV. “The U=U message allows healthcare workers to give people living with HIV confidence and agency over their sexual health and wellbeing. We applaud the government’s commitment to formally endorsing U=U, which will ultimately help us work towards the virtual elimination of HIV transmission,” said Mr Apostolellis. Let’s help reduce stigmas relating to HIV - Antiretroviral treatment, or ART works by reducing the amount of the virus in the blood to undetectable levels. This means the levels of HIV are so low that the virus cannot be passed on. This is called having an undetectable viral load or being undetectable. Undetectable = Untransmissable.

Did you know that 49 out of 50 people diagnosed with HIV in the UK cannot transmit the virus? That's 98%. This is because they are on successful treatment and the virus is suppressed. And that means their viral load – the key indicator of HIV in a test – is 'undetectable'. #Kenya has one of the highest rates of HIV-infection in the world. UNAIDS reports that, in 2018, 1.6 million Kenyans were living with HIV. Of this population, Avert, a resource for information on HIV and #AIDS, states that more than half are unaware of their #HIV status. Fortunately, the Kenyan Ministry of Health has announced that HIV cases are decreasing, with the HIV prevalence standing at 4.9% as of February 2020. To improve HIV status awareness, the Kenyan government has partnered with the #EGPAF to invest in door-to-door testing campaigns and self-testing kits. The program has emphasized aiding counties with high or rising HIV prevalence. Additionally, #UNAIDS reported that 91% of HIV-positive pregnant women were able to access #antiretroviral treatment in 2018. 5moGood job!! This is a great question that comes up in clinical practice as a lot of people don’t know about U=U. Undetectable is equal to Untransmissable.
