REFLECTION ON THE FUTURE COHESION POLICY (POST-2027) The reflection process on the future Cohesion policy (post-2027) has started across the EU. Discussions are taking place in various experts and stakeholders’ groups, in events and debates. To promote this reflection process, the European Commission has invited all European Territorial Cooperation Programmes to join the INTERREG consultation 2024 on the future Cohesion policy (post 2027). All INTERREG programmes are asked to contribute to the consultation by delivering own consultation activities and submitting a harvesting report to the European Commission by the end of December 2024. On the basis of the findings, the European Commission will present the harvest of the consultation and first ideas for the future Cohesion policy to the large public at a dedicated event in Gorizia/Nova Gorica (SL/IT) in spring 2025. URBACT Programme is not an exception and will contribute to the INTERREG consultation and has started its own consultation process with an EU survey. The online survey is running from 26 March to 31 July 2024 and is available here. While the survey is targeted to cities of any size and their needs, it is also open to the general public.

'Functional areas are a powerful tool for territorial development in Europe' On July 12, an external seminar on Functional areas' role in strengthening Cohesion Policy was organised by the COTER commission, together with the Mayor of Balatonfüred. The event offered a great opportunity to discuss the role of functional areas in advancing cohesion policy goals, and also to share the results and key insights from the 'Functional Areas in the EU' project, including the recently published Methodological Toolkit for functional areas. Thanks to a grant from the ESPON Programme, I was able to carry out research, and later write a paper on a small town in Abruzzo and strategies to tackle depopulation, a dynamic that affects this and many rural areas across Europe. What is perhaps peculiar about this case study, is that it examines the reasons why a policy initiative aimed at encouraging the arrival of residents and the establishment of new business activities in the village was eventually not implemented. If we were to study only successful cases of implemented mitigation policies, we would have fewer opportunities to describe and thus learn from the limitations that exist in rural areas and in their governance structures. The article is titled: "Making Inner Areas Attractive Again? Local Policy Strategies to Counter Depopulation and Economic Decline in Abruzzo, Italy" and is available here: https://lnkd.in/dfZ7SiuQ.

Island regions unite in Brussels for high-level political conference, with Gianni Chianetta representing Greening the Islands! Today, key representatives from island regions across Europe have gathered in Brussels for a high-level political conference to discuss the future of islands’ sustainable development. The conference is focused on developing a European Strategy for Islands, in line with the priorities of the Spanish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Mr Chianetta is at the conference and we are proud to be a part of this important conversation. We believe the islands need a strong voice in the EU and we are committed to working with our partners to build a better future for all islands. The panel discussion includes high-level political officials from the Balearic Islands, Corsica, Crete, Gozo, Ionian Islands, and Sardinia. This is a unique opportunity to hear from these leaders and learn about their vision for the future of islands. Following the panel discussion, the floor will be open to the audience, including Members of European Parliament, allies of the Committee of the Regions, collaborators of the Economic and Social Committee, spokespersons of the European Commission, political and technical representatives of island local and regional authorities, as well as civil society representatives. This is an important event for the future of island regions. Stay tuned for updates on the outcomes of the conference and how we can all work together to build a better future for islands! #IslandRegions #EuropeanStrategyForIslands #FutureOfIslands
