Dear IKI Partners and Friends, At the IKI, we are convinced that climate and biodiversity action is more successful, sustainable, and equitable when young people are meaningfully involved and empowered. Young people’s ideas, skills and passion are crucial for addressing global challenges of today and tomorrow. Despite making up a significant part of the population in developing and emerging economies and being most affected by climate change, youth voices are often unheard and their transformational potential remains untapped. The IKI is committed to supporting youth engagement and empowerment. Our support includes training, awareness-raising, networking and participation in decision-making processes. In the latest issue of the IKI newsletter, we present a number of projects that focus in their activies on young people in the IKI countries. These range from a Just Energy Transition Study Tour in Germany and restoration activities in schools in Malawi to environmental education programmes in Ukraine and a radical reform of formal climate change education in Zambia. And a reminder—the IKI Country Call for Colombia is only open until 3 September 2024. The International Climate Initiative (IKI) recognizes that effective climate and biodiversity action can only be achieved through successful cooperation with people from diverse backgrounds, each bringing their own identities, perspectives, and gender-specific needs. As a guiding principle, the IKI is committed to embedding gender justice into its climate action efforts. To achieve this, the IKI has developed a Gender Action Plan (GAP), which implements its comprehensive gender strategy. This strategy promotes gender-transformative approaches in international climate and biodiversity projects, while ensuring that all projects meet a minimum standard of gender-responsiveness. By reducing gender-based disadvantages and discrimination, we can unlock the full potential of all participants and enhance climate and biodiversity outcomes. We are committed to measuring our progress and improving gender justice across all IKI-funded projects, contributing to a socio-ecological transformation that leaves no one behind.
