Northeastern Illinois is experiencing a traffic safety crisis. Traffic fatalities have been increasing since 2014. Speed has been identified as a contributing factor in 35 to 40 percent of fatal crashes in the state. This is Global Road Safety Week, a reminder that every person on the road is part of a community of people who deserve empathy and respect. Reducing vehicle speeds is critical to improving traffic safety. You may have seen one of the "Make a Safety Statement" adverts appearing in 80 countries to draw attention to road safety. Surprisingly, even though traffic accidents are the number one cause of death for 5- to 20-year-olds globally, road safety is typically not a high-priority issue. This campaign, supported by celebrities worldwide, is one way the UN Special Envoy for Road Safety (former Formula 1 racer @Jean Todt) is trying to change that.
