I think that there is a misconception that the cybersecurity industry is for experienced IT professionals only.
I completely disagree. I started in this field at 18 with no experience, no degree, and no certifications. I’m now fairly well known in this industry and do have a pretty good success rate at stopping cybersecurity breaches.
I don’t think just anyone should be hired to work in a SOC, but I think that we shouldn’t gate keep it by requiring that people work X number of years in a help desk role. Help desk hardly even applies to what a cybersecurity analyst should be doing on a daily basis anyways.
In the same way, I do think that the fact that I am 23 years old may dissuade some people from doing business with my company, Blueberry Security. I think that’s a shame for them because our expertise, and value in blue team really is unmatched.
Some people are meant for this job. They dream about doing it. Let them give it a shot!
