What makes a VA Community Clinic work?  Especially a rural clinic far removed from the hustle and bustle of the main campus. The answer might surprise you. I spend a lot of time in our lobby, meeting and greeting Veterans and their families. When we have time to chat, the topic of our conversation often drifts to the amount of time the Veterans have on their hands. They spent years working and raising families. But in their twilight years, meaningful engagement is often elusive. That’s when I steer the conversation to volunteer work, especially in our clinic. Starting a volunteer program in a rural clinic is hard work. More often than not, it’s like working in sales; you get far more “No thanks” than you do “Tell me more.” But it’s not an insurmountable challenge, and once you build a network and get to know the movers and shakers in the clinic (yes, some stakeholders are pretty active), you can build a solid group of volunteers. Our clinic in St. George, UT, started from scratch, but today, we have three solid volunteers with packets ready to go. Three volunteers might not sound like much, but their dedication and commitment will pay huge dividends. We aim to have six volunteers (three teams of two volunteers) trained and ready by the end of the summer. Hmm I hope there is more to this story (https://lnkd.in/gaNxJh6k). And this is just a one-sided journalistic story to grab attention. But it seems this is a trend. ⛔ A certain CEO of a well known Children's Hospital on the East coast received an annual compensation that exceeded what the non-profit hospital had provided to charities or for charitable work in the preceding 3 years combined. ⛔86 percent of nonprofit hospitals do not provide more charity care than the value of their tax exemption (https://lnkd.in/gEB3c-Dh).  ⛔Increases in profit at nonprofit hospitals are not correlated with increases in charity care. ⛔Another hospital leader in the East Coast has now been brought up on criminal charges for leading a faith-based health system into bankruptcy during which he profited handsomely from PE. In non-profit hospitals, over a decade ago, about 10-20% of profits went to supporting administration. That number has now swollen to 30-40% of profits supporting administration. With that "investment" in healthcare operations and administration, you would expect that we would see similar advances in healthcare outcomes, but we don't. Sobering data and information. It is a profit driven industry with a few gaining the most, while patients are often left with footing a bill that puts them at the brink of bankruptcy, often for mediocre care. #UsingWhatWeHaveBetter

'Food is Medicine' Quantity and Quality - less can be more! Let food be thy medicine and for prevention is better than cure (not that a cure can exist in a system). The 'cure' is an example of wishful thinking which confounds the principle underlying Science - of rationality given what we now (and have known for years!) know. The entire body either collapses if we age badly or strengthens if we age well - where the Ageing reversal community have compiled a list of anti-ageing interventions. Most notably restriction of a certain profile of foods and the development of mitochondria within this metabolic context.

You have a mind and you use it. You can ask clients some hard and direct questions and they know your personality now if they are fairly new clients. Other long term clients know it only too well. You think of everything and your eyes and ears miss nothing and your mind remembers everything. And when it comes to hospitals and healthcare, your mind thinks of everything, and you research everything if it doesn't come to you otherwise. Under that laugh is a very serious and determined person. You think of hospital and healthcare think tanks, do they exist? Of course they do. But you can't follow some of them on social media because they don't give you that option. You find them nevertheless, and you find out exactly what they think, what they research, and what they are willing to share with you, knowledge, strategy, and policy wise. You know that most small non-profits will never grow, bring in bigger donations and funding as usual, never bring in change makers, difference makers, or trail blazers, because they can't afford to pay them, and that their staff and directors are more interested in salary than what their employer can contribute to the community, the sector, the recipients, and other. Well, besides, you already know most of this stuff and what and why the research findings are.
