Your parents don't understand your job. Neither do your #donors. Because we use our job titles to explain what we do. So you're the: - "Senior Development Manager for Major Donors". - "Key Relationships and Special Events Officer". - "Vice-President for Leadership Giving" - "Regional Philanthropy Lead". These mean something to you because you're embedded in the sector. But they are a foreign language to an outsider. And often these titles mean different #responsibilities in different organisations. Next time, DESCRIBE your role, rather than TELL your job title. You: 🚀 work with supporters who want to make a transformational impact in the world in line with their values. 🚀 create amazing experiences for supporters who want to make significant change in the world. 🚀 work one-on-one with supporters who want to change the status quo. When you describe your role, it: - is easier for donors to understand what you do. - invites questions and curiosity. - is memorable. Which is exactly what you want to happen. 📌 Remember: Leave the title for the office, and start describing your role to your donors. #donorengagement #stewardship #nonprofits

Why is development turnover so high in nonprofits? Did you know the average tenure for someone in a nonprofit development role is just 18 months? One of my clients shared this stat recently, and it explains why so many nonprofits are actively recruiting for positions like Major Gift Officers, Directors of Development, and Chief Advancement Officers. The reasons for this high turnover are varied: burnout from constant fundraising pressure, compensation gaps compared to the for-profit sector, unrealistic goals, and limited resources. If you're currently in a development role, or if you're a nonprofit leader hiring for one, I'd love to hear your thoughts! What challenges have you faced, and how have you tackled them? Let's start a conversation and learn from each other. #peoplemattermost #nonprofits #development #advancement

Today’s piece of (pro bono) advice for nonprofit leaders… When hiring "entry-level" fundraisers you need to understand that NO PRIOR FUNDRAISING EXPERIENCE is required. It does NOT mean: - 2+ years of fundraising experience - Demonstrated history of exceeding fundraising targets - An excuse to offer lower compensation When you're hiring entry-level fundraisers, focus on their transferable skills, values, and potential. Also be prepared to provide the necessary training, because if you're not willing to invest in them and their understanding of the fundamentals, then the position isn't truly entry-level.

When transitioning into a new fundraising career, understanding your worth is crucial. Research average salaries, assess your transferable skills, and network with professionals to gain insights. Tailor your pitch to highlight your passion and readiness to learn, and be prepared to negotiate based on the value you will bring to the role. Don't settle for the first offer, it could ultimately cost you $100k plus in lost lifetime earnings and super.

What are nonprofit funders doing to ensure that organizations are paying and treating staff fairly? In my over 12 years working for and with nonprofits, consistent issues I’ve encountered are severe imbalances in pay structures, abusive and problematic leadership, racist and classist policies around hiring and reimbursement, and high turnover rates that create disjointed and inconsistent programs and services for community. I am not the only one with these experiences. How do we begin to hold nonprofit leaders accountable for mismanagement and exploitation of staff?
