Protecting the Greater Caribbean’s beaches The Association of Caribbean States (ACS), working with the Technical Advisory Group (TAG), chose three beaches to study for future coastal restoration projects: Viento Frio in Panama, Runaway Bay in Antigua and Barbuda, and Bonasse in Trinidad and Tobago. The Greater Caribbean region has a mix of different coastal landscapes, each facing challenges such as strong winds, ocean currents, rising sea levels and hurricanes. Amazing sketch of what now I think is known as Kits Beach. So impacted, it is totally indistinguishable. Looks like the man made beach is a problem. "The addition of vast volumes of dredged sand at Kitsilano Beach, Locarno Beach, and Jericho Beach on top of the coarser natural beach substrate preferred by smelt, very likely negatively affected smelt spawning (Levy, 1985:14)." Exciting news from our Maritimes partners at TransCoastal Adaptations: Centre for Nature-Based Solutions! They've developed a valuable new resource exploring how the Green Shores program aligns with the innovative "5Rs Framework" for nature-based coastal adaptation. The 5Rs—Reimagine, Reserve, Relocate, Restore, and Reinforce—offer a fresh perspective on addressing challenges like sea level rise and shoreline resilience through nature-based solutions. "Forests that can fully deliver for climate change; fully deliver for biodiversity decline; fully deliver for people's health and well-being. And importantly, maintain a productive element so it can be financially resilient going forward.” What do you think of Forestry England’s new ‘wild areas’ initiative? While baselining and MRV will play a key role in educating us on if, when and how to intervene, we also love to hear experts talking confidently about letting nature lead the way. 🦋 #Woodlands #WoodlandCreation #naturebasedsolutions #biodiversity #sustainability #climateaction
We’re letting nature transform more than 8,000 hectares of land in four of the nation’s forests 🌳 Our vision is that the nation’s forests will become the most valuable places for wildlife to thrive and expand in England. So to help us achieve that, we’re establishing four new wild areas to restore fully-functioning ecosystems and support nature’s recovery. Letting nature take the lead, we’ll be taking a new approach to managing these areas by allowing natural processes more space to shape the forest landscape. Find out more: https://lnkd.in/eTqQdwQx

I hope the planers actually get out from behind their desk and visit the sites & nearby sites of sustainable Nature Conservation such as Wood Pasture or Coppice so they do not put more blocks in the way of Nature's Recovery like the DfT does by fragmenting sites, increasing Climate Change & pollution by increasing roads to facilitate more traffic & to predictably spread diseases like Ash Die Back that has already taken many Millions of £ out of the pocket of Nature Conservation organizations. Re-Wilding is an answer to the damage caused by the Forestry Commission trying to predict the future demand for a very long-term crop (90+ years for trees) when the government works on long-term plans of 3 years max with funding subject to the whims of the day. As bureaucrats give grants based on the survival rate of planted trees after 10 years the land-managers have to cut down all the natural regeneration so they can count how many of their planted trees survived. Woodlands used to provide all the fuel for cooking & heating for domestic & industrial use and over 90% of all buildings for centuries until the building of the canals enabled the government's fake accounting system to make it cheaper to import coal than Coppice local Woods.

✨ How would a Dolores Canyons National Monument help local communities address rising visitation to the Western Slope's public lands? 🏜️ Moab's John Weisheit offers his perspective from a community overrun by tourism: "To protect local values, customs and culture, communities will need to plan for the future of their surrounding public lands — and a national monument would provide an opportunity to do just that. The process would provide a path to permanently protect lands already managed for wildland values, plan for infrastructure upgrades to handle increased traffic, waste and strategically direct visitor flow to ensure a positive experience for everyone; all while protecting sensitive ecosystems and the rural character of the communities. Taken together this is not an easy task, but a wholly American enterprise." Read more in this op-ed: https://ow.ly/lwRu50Sx6y8 #ProtectTheDolores
