Did you know? Research examining civic engagement and state health outcomes between 1996 and 2020 revealed a positive association: states with higher levels of civic engagement and voter participation tend to experience improved public health outcomes. Additionally, the Health & Democracy Index analysis has demonstrated that states with inclusive voting policies and fewer voting barriers exhibit better health outcomes; conversely, states with restrictive voting policies tend to have worse health outcomes. According to the Index, these voting barriers also contribute to the exacerbation of existing health disparities, such as disparities in infant mortality rates. Health Equity! Visión y Compromiso will close the gap in public health care and social services, family by family, in Boyle Heights in Los Angeles, CA. Our partnership with Rising Communities, WHITE MEMORIAL COMMUNITY HEALTH CENTER (WMCHC), and the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health aims to provide neighborhood-level intervention to close the gap in addressing social determinants of health and build health equity. Visión y Compromiso is one of 10 community-based organizations to partner with Rising Communities along with 10 healthcare partners in 10 high-priority, service areas throughout Los Angeles County, to implement the Community Public Health Teams (CPHT) Pilot Project. This project aims to build long-term relationships with at least 80,000 households in Los Angeles County. Visión y Compromiso will coordinate with other service providers in Boyle Heights to provide outreach, engagement, and services to families. “By designing a long-term partnership with community-based organizations and health care partners to conduct household and community services, Public Health is expanding the public health workforce and building infrastructure for a community-based system of care.” Department of Public Health. National Public Health Week-Day 1 "Civic Engagement" Today is the first day of National Public Health Week which is crucial week as it raises awareness about public health issues and encourages individuals to take action to improve the health of their communities. Each day is a different topic, and today's topic is "Civic Engagement". Civic engagement plays a vital role in Public Health by empowering citizens to advocate for policies and initiatives that promote public health, such as access to healthcare, clean air and water, healthy food options, and disease prevention measures. Together, they foster a culture of wellness and social responsibility, ultimately leading to healthier and more resilient societies. Local civic engagement allows residents to voice their concerns and influence local policies and decision-making processes. This can lead to the implementation of initiatives that address community needs, such as improving infrastructure, enhancing public safety measures, and promoting environmental sustainability. UHC, embodies the principle of providing quality healthcare to all individuals without causing financial strain. It emphasizes a gradual and comprehensive expansion of healthcare services beyond a basic minimum. Within the context of SDG-Goal 3, which is pivotal to numerous other goals, achieving the UHC target is considered crucial for achieving the health goals. As we observe UHC Day in 2023, let us reaffirm our commitment to taking meaningful steps towards the actualization of Universal Health Coverage. A poignant statement read somewhere lingers in my memory-“ children and families who deserve a world where health, equality & justice are not just aspirations but fundamental rights”. #UHC2023
