Did you know? Research examining civic engagement and state health outcomes between 1996 and 2020 revealed a positive association: states with higher levels of civic engagement and voter participation tend to experience improved public health outcomes. Additionally, the Health & Democracy Index analysis has demonstrated that states with inclusive voting policies and fewer voting barriers exhibit better health outcomes; conversely, states with restrictive voting policies tend to have worse health outcomes. According to the Index, these voting barriers also contribute to the exacerbation of existing health disparities, such as disparities in infant mortality rates. Voting and civic engagement can have a powerful impact on our community's well-being as we identify problems, determine solutions, and direct resources, and so shape our opportunities to be healthy. Studies have even indicated that states with higher voter turnout experience better public health outcomes! 🗳📈💪🏽 This National Public Health Week, let's recognize the significance of civic engagement in building healthier communities. By exercising our right to vote and participating in other forms of civic action, we can make a difference in public health policies and initiatives.
