Sharper X-ray Vision: New Method Designs Ultimate Nanofocusing Lenses Ever wanted to see the tiniest details? X-ray microscopes use special lenses to magnify objects millions of times smaller than a human hair. But these lenses, called Fresnel zone plates, can be tricky to design. They require a balancing act between how well they focus (resolution) and how much X-ray light they capture (efficiency). Researchers at ANSTO have developed a new method to optimize these zone plates! Imagine a recipe for the perfect lens, taking into account all the limitations of the kitchen (like available ingredients and oven temperature). This method does the same for zone plates, considering real-world manufacturing limitations. The result? Zone plates with the best possible focus for a given situation. Evidence of striped electronic phases in a structurally modulated superlattice--- The bulk vdW superlattice SrTa2S5 realizing an incommensurate one-dimensional (1D) structural modulation of 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) H-TaS2 layers.
