K-epsilon Turbulence model: In the k-epsilon model, which is an Eddy Viscosity model, the turbulent or eddy viscosity in the Boussinesq hypothesis needs to be modeled. In this model, the turbulent viscosity is proportional to the turbulent kinetic energy and the mixing length scale discussed previously. To refine this approach and avoid direct reliance on the distance to the wall, two additional transport equations for turbulent kinetic energy "k" and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy "epsilon" are integrated with the continuity and momentum equations. It should be noted that solving the equation for epsilon provides insight into the turbulence scale within any region of the fluid flow. Epsilon is typically lower in large eddies and higher in small eddies, where the turbulent kinetic energy is dissipated due to viscosity effects. By solving these two equations for k and epsilon and then calculating the eddy viscosity, and substituting the Reynolds stress with the Boussinesq approximation in the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations, the system of equations is closed. Ultimately, these equations will depend only on the mean velocities of the flow. Below is the transport equation of turbulence kinetic energy which is an non-conservative quantity, in the left hand side there are the time-changing and the convection terms, while in the right hand side there are the diffusion, the production and the dissipation terms:

CFD Tuesday Today in CFD Tuesday we're separating oil and water.    Instead of checking how long it will take till the mixture is homogeneous (like we did in this post: https://lnkd.in/em6g9TxB) we are looking at how long it takes before the oil starts to separate from the water. In order to do so we added a perfect homogeneous mixture of olive oil and water to our tank, filling it till the 2/3 level. The first 5 seconds we gave it a little swirl, to pretend that we just finished mixing. Then we stopped the agitator and waited, and waited, and waited... till our simulation was done.    As you can see in the video, after about 50 seconds we have a pocket of water or olive oil somewhere, since the maximum difference between olive oil and water is 1. Then, slowly the olive oil starts to separate from the water, as you can see by the slow increase of the average volume fraction difference.    This time we used three different phases in our mixture multiphase (MMP) method, namely air, water and olive oil. Using the Adaptive Interface Sharpening (ADIS) method means that the oil separates neatly from the water. #Femto #CFD #Seperating #Simulation #Weenableinnovation
