The International Maritime Organization Maritime Organisation has launched the "IMO CARES" Maritime Technology Global Challenge, focusing on decarbonising maritime operations in Africa and the Caribbean. This initiative invites global technology providers to submit solutions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime sector. Target countries like Namibia, St Kitts and Nevis, and Trinidad and Tobago stand to benefit. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is inviting developing countries to express interest in receiving support to create National Action Plans (NAPs) aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from shipping. This support, provided through the GreenVoyage2050 programme, allows eligible countries to develop tailored plans that address their specific maritime challenges. NAPs can include measures such as enhancing institutional frameworks, promoting energy efficiency, adopting low-carbon fuels, and developing green shipping infrastructure. This initiative supports IMO’s GHG mitigation commitments and aims to achieve significant reductions in ship emissions. The GreenVoyage2050 programme offers comprehensive technical assistance to selected countries, including capacity-building, expert personnel, data analysis, and stakeholder dialogue facilitation. The programme aims to ensure that NAPs are practical, actionable, and tailored to each country's unique needs. Astrid Dispert, GreenVoyage2050 Manager, emphasized the importance of NAPs in tackling maritime GHG emissions and promoting collaboration among stakeholders to build a sustainable and resilient maritime future. Developing countries eligible for Official Development Assistance are encouraged to submit their expressions of interest by 6 September 2024. IMO’s 2023 Strategy on Reduction of GHG Emissions from Ships sets ambitious goals, including achieving net-zero GHG emissions by 2050 and ensuring the uptake of alternative low-emission technologies by 2030. The GreenVoyage2050 programme, initiated by IMO, has been actively supporting countries in developing policy frameworks and pilot projects to reduce GHG emissions. Phase II of the programme, running from 2024 to 2030, will expand this support with funding from several donor countries.
